I think the castle was where Celestia and Nightmare Moon had their final battle, ending with the banishment.
The magic used was so powerful it permanently altered the enviroment of the surrounding area, named the Everfree Forest to represent that one day Celestia would free her sister.

It's a mystery. I like to think that they originally wanted things to be "natural" and the Everfree was actually the nature of the entire region, but after Discord's crazy assraping of Equestria (I like to think that under that affable exterior is a complete monster, and we saw nothing of what he is capable of) they decided absolute order was the way to go. Nature is, after all, chaotic. As for why they kept Everfree natural, perhaps they just wanted to preserve their old home, or maybe they can't influence it at all.

I'd say that the Castle used to be one they shared and was the site of an epic conflict between Celestia and Nightmare Moon. Everyone lay in rubble by the times things were over and, since I like Regretlestia canon best, she simply couldn't find the heart to remake the castle grounds on the city she and her sister founded together.

So she made a new one and tried to forget what she had done.

Pomf, if you like Regetlestia, I recommend Eternal on Fimfiction. Ten chapters, each nearly 20,00 words. Definitely a day's worth of reading. It is, without a fucking doubt, one of the most powerful fanfics I have ever read. Every self-respecting brony needs to read the fuck out of that fic.

I have no tear ducts; that fic stapled spares to my face.

^ ...Jesus christ. I needed something to distract me from Inheritance (i fully recognize i'm a literary snob don't judge me).

I'll have to get through that. I also heard that Composure is good even if it has Twilestia shipping.

Thanks one anon amongst the many. You're strangely not a fag

Or nobody actually gave it a single thought, they just slapped together a creepy ruin with a creepy forest, voila, nice background for a final fight.

OH WAIT YOU THINK THEY ACTUALLY APPROACHED IT AS A CHILDREN'S SHOW WHOA MAN THAT'S SOME CRAZY SHIT RIGHT THERE

We have talked before, Pomf. Almost every day, actually. I like to consider myself one of the less faggy anons.

Well, something that might play into the legitimacy of our headcanons is how far into the Everfree the castle actually is, as well as just how big the Everfree is. What's beyond the Everfree? Is the castle in the middle of it, or closer to an edge of the forest?

And there are many other pieces too, like the Zap Apples originating from there. If the forest was actually ruled over by Celestia and Luna at one time, were the Zap Apples a creation of theirs or their former subjects? How does that fit in with the timeline of the Hearth's Warming events and the founding of Equestria?

IMHO, it's too early to be making headcanons and assumptions with how little information we really have when you look at the bigger picture

I don't know... I came up with a little theory myself. What if the everfree forest existed a long time ago even before Discord. What if the everfree forest, has something sealed within it. Something even more evil than Discord. Mu(nothingness) It would be a counterpart to chaos because there is nothing that upsets the absolute order. And maybe the forest is affected by the natural order of life. Everything lives & dies. Of course this absolute order that would see fit to wipe out all of equestria. And the only thing that would even rival it is Discord. Discord probably tricked this "Abyss" with one of his many games, & thus sealing it within the everfree forest. Again It's just my theory & I'm calling it now!

Wasn't it said somewhere in the show once that Everfree is GIGANTIC? That would put the castle somewhere on the fringe of the forest. Deep enough to be dangerous, but with a forest that big... Who knows what secrets it holds?

My personal thoughts are EverFree Castle was originally the capitol of Equestria, much like Canterlot is these days. Who would build a castle in the middle of a moster filled forest that doesn't obey reality?

When Celestia and NMM clashed, their powers destroyed much of the city, and left the castle in ruins. The two semi-deities warped reality around them, leading to the EverFree Forests' creation. Animals were warped together, leading to the twisted creatures that reside there.

As such, the capitol had to be moved, to Canterlot.

Is the reason Celestia stayed clear of NightMare Moon, and neither Luna or Celestia fought Discord. The sort of damage they cause when fighting is immense, and permanent.

No forest was created from Discord's defeat, because they never bothered to directly fight him. It was 'Elements, do you thing' instantly. For NMM however, Celestia attempted her hardest to subdue her herself, to hopefully turn her back, before the Elements did their thing.

I do have to agree with Shader on why Celestia avoided NMM and Discord. When Gods fight, the destruction is incomprehensible. But I don't think there was ever a city... the castle was the only visible ruin.

My idea is that the castle was where Celestia and Luna lived before they defeated Discord, and when Discord was sealed away, they went and founded Canterlot, and the old castle and the surrounding village fell into ruin as the Everfree Forest formed out of the magic energy that remained in the area, which was being protected from Discord's power until he was defeated. NMM chose to lead Celestia to the ruined castle for the battle, and you kind of know the rest.

My theory is that Everfree was the Minas Ithil to Canterlot's Minas Anor (Literally in this case) and both served as Dual Capitals of Equestria after the defeat of Discord. When Luna Became Nightmare Moon it became the Minas Morgul to Canterlot's Minas Tirith (Again Literally in this case) and the Battle between Nightmare Moon and Celestia left much of the City Destroyed and the Castle in Ruins. The Everfree Forest was once The Castle Gardens/Royal Park (Think of the Windsor Great Park or New Forest minus the hunting) which were left to their own devices after Nighmare Moon was seal away and by the time of the series grew to its large size (Kinda like the old Gardens at Cair Paravel did by the time of Prince Caspian). The Reason the forest is so wild is that Luna decided not to place the Forest under order as with the rest of Equestria (I mean come on we saw what her tastes were like in "Luna Eclipsed") Hence all the monsters and unregulated growth.

I think they just wanted a creepy castle in a creepy forest. Most villains have creepy castles in creepy areas.

Some bad shit definitely went down around that castle. A confrontation between creatures that live millenia and move orbital bodies at whim can't be good for neighborhood property values.

(A good fic exploring Luna's part in what went down: Within and Without, by Cloudy Skies. Oh, and Eternal is amazing too - best thing I read in the last few years, and I read a lot of popular books.)

I wonder whether Celestia left the elements in the castle out of regret and shame, not wanting to touch them... Or because she knew Twilight would find them there as part of a master plan. Or both.
