I like Dash, but I'd fucking love her if the writers weren't so hellbent on humilating and belittling her. Seriously, season 2 writers hate the shit out of this pony. Makes me hate the non-serial nature of this show sometimes, she got amazing character development in season 1 but I haven't seen any of that in season 2. |

Well... Okay, she was okay in Lesson Zero. But between then and "Reading Rainbow", she's been publicly humiliated by her closest friends without being confronted directly first, portrayed as an insensitive animal abuser, suffered a near death situation in the wilderness after being pinned by a boulder, was repeatedly denied an alcoholic beverage for cruel comedic relief... Good lord. |

Thing is....writing for Rainbow Dash is like writing for an anime character. She's a lot more intense then most western characters, and she's the butt monkey more then most because she's tough enough to take it.
That being said, we are NOT very good at writing for such a character on a regular basis. Quite honestly, if you remove the Mare do well episode from the equation, I think they have her personality down pretty well. You could tell the Mare do Well was not going to be taken seriously for anyone when the Mayor announced "This town has a NEW hero!" seconds after Mare do Well made her first appearance, as if people could toss aside the pony that saves lives every day. |

@389 She might be tough enough to take it, but then Applejack probably would be too. The writers seem to use AJ as the straight man though, so they pick on Dash instead.
Actually, Twilight seemed to get some butt monkey treatment in "Feeling Pinkie Keen". I wouldn't mind if the abuse was at least spread around a little more evenly instead focusing on one character. There's no reason Dash needs to be portrayed as unlikable, especially since she was treated better in season 1. |

^ Agreed, Applejack is tough but is in a almost a complete straight man position. I don't know if its due to the fact she's a 'simple farm girl', or her character is one that was not original, just altered from G1. But for the record, I don't hate ANY of the main characters. The all have glorious good points in one way or another. Rainbow Dash is simply the easiest target for hate, cause a lot of people need someone to hate, and some people have no patience for anti-attributes, even in the most heroic of people.
Twilight has more butt monkey treatment then most since, well, she's the "main" character (kind of). She's also a bit of a straight man. The difference between Twilight and Applejack is that Applejack is completely set on her ways. Twilight has so little experience with friendship or casual empathy that she has the most to learn, even though she was raised to be nice about it. That's a difference between Twilight and Dash. Twilight has a limit to the patience she has with her friends and friendship itself, but it allows her to evolve. Dash acts with her ego and heart on full tilt as natural as breathing. She may act a little jerky sometimes, but she has near limitless love for her friends, and, in either season 1 or season 2, she'd fight from hell and back again for her friends. |
