@Claire To a degree, yes. If you love everything about that person except their skin color and choose to not be with them just for that, yes, that's stupid. However, skin color is another physical trait that people have preferences on, and there isn't anything wrong with that. I prefer white Twilight, too, but like Heinous and crash said, I'm still going to like her because she's still Twilight.

I don't like black Twilight because I don't. It's a drastic difference from what I imagine she'd look like as a human.
Besides, just look at the image. You can't honestly say that's how you picture Twilight as a human, can you? I really don't think it has anything to do with being racist. I'm not racist at all, but making a humanized Twilight black just for the sake of making her black irks me quite some. You're not making any kind of statement by drawing a cartoon character from a little girls show black. You're not changing anything, only turning [some] people off from your artwork because you decided to stray from the norm.
Love how people are claiming the OP is a genius too. Yep, because it takes a genius to point fingers at people for having different preferences and claim "They be racist, yo!" Because let's face it, that's the only reason anyone could ever dislike a black humanized Twilight Sparkle, right? Yep... totally nothing to do with personal preference at all.
But in all seriousness, if you want to draw the characters black as humans, fine. Just don't start crying racist at everyone when you realize not everyone pictures the characters the same way as you do.

I'm black, and I can't dance, gashunk. At all.

But I think OP is making a statement that she has to be black, but that she [i]can[i/] be. I'm mostly indifferent. The fact that artists draw humanizations differently isn't that big of a deal. Anyone making a big deal of it one way or another is probably just an extreme kind of person.

@Avagantamos: I don't think you get it, and frankly you're only digging yourself further into a hole. What anon meant is that by you stating that anything that isn't "white" strays from the "norm" implies that you're already preconceived to believe that "white" is the standard primary choice. To the public that is what we call more of a white nationalist view, someone who views their race (in this case White) to be above others. The problem isn't that black Twilight is controversial. Did you get that? She isn't the problem. The problem, is that people who think like you or more to an extreme seem to reek in droves here on Ponibooru.

I know what he meant, but I wasn't trying to say whites are superior to anyone. To me normal =/= superior. It's not the same. I don't like to say any race has any kind of advantage over another in any way. Because exceptions are prevalent everywhere. But if you paid attention, I was never arguing that black Twilight was the problem. It's a controversy and that's a fact. The problem arises when people are accused of being racist and, just now, a "white nationalist." (I think it's worth noting that I'm originally Mexican at this point.)
People who think like me? Hold on now, I think you're starting to associate me with people I don't want to be associated with. I hold my own opinion that I do not like humanized Twilight Sparkle being black. But it has none to do with how I view other races. More of how I associate a skin color with a personality. The most prominent personality of black people in the US is obvious, and because of the obvious differences between that personality and Twilight's, it's hard for me to imagine black skin on Twilight. Sure, there can be exceptions, but the majority of people will associate a personality with the most appropriate skin color based on that color's most prominent personality. You can't blame them, it's natural. They're not bad people because they do this, and it certainly doesn't make them racist- they don't do it out of hatred.
People with light skin are different. They don't have one or two very prominent personalities, in fact, when most think of a white person, they can probably think of a million different personalities. This is because there are white people in so many parts of the world that are all different because of cultural barriers. So many personalities, not one or two to easily paste onto characters. So because of this, light skin acts as sort of a blank slate. Essentially, by default, everyone is assumed white until clearly exemplified otherwise. This is the way it works, but I'm not saying that I believe it should be this way. It's just the way it is, and it can sure be arguable whether that itself is right or wrong, but the fact is it's an unwritten rule. I'm only pointing out what I've observed and trying to explain people's frustrations with this whole ordeal, these are in no way my own opinions. Now, why I say people being accused of racism is a problem is because the accusers probably don't actually think of whites as a blank slate because of whatever race they are or just because. Either this, or people have a habit of twisting things to make the disagreeing member seem like a bad guy before trying to actually figure out why people think the way they do.
Anyway, I'm bad at English, so I'll apologize for any misunderstandings. I kinda just feel like I wanna stop talking about this now :/

Apparently so.

For the record, I don't like (most) depictions of Black Twilight simply because I find the drawings aesthetically unpleasing. This drawing is fine, but most others aren't. Also, it sometimes feels like some artists make Twilight black as some sort of "statement", saying that groups of friends need to be multicultural or else there's something wrong with them. In other words, it all feels really really PC, and I can't stand PC. This isn't Sesame Street; we don't have to have a rainbow coalition for its own sake. (plus there's the whole all the VA's are white thing that I just can't ignore).

Now, I'm not saying my way is correct. It's a free Internets; everyone is entitled to their own interpretations. I am entitled to like or dislike those interpretations as I see fit. Twilight can be Black if artists want her to be. It's their right. That's just not how I envision a human version of the character.

Basically, I envision all the characters (except Zecora, obviously) as White, maybe some sort of light-skinned biracial thing with Twi. If that means I'm a horrible person, then so be it.

I first kind of associated Twilight with being south american cause of a picture I had of someone who looks just like her- after I got over that initial thing she sort of became the one pony I could imagine as any race if she was human. Personally I'm black, and I don't act "stereotypically black.", nore do I have that mindset cause nobody in my family acts like that.
Maybe it's not a statement so much as people actually just like drawing her that way? One of my friends associated black Twi with the fact that she's purple, and in a way it makes sense- and he personally saw her as asian.

@Avagantamos: Main crux of argument: "Twilight isn't black because I can't imagine black people having that kind of personality. Black people have an obvious singular personality type while white people way more personality types."

Wow. That is, without a doubt, the WORST argument I've ever heard regarding any form of ethnicity.

1.) "It's a controversy and that's a fact." Controversy=/=fact. Controversy over black Twilight only ever came up because people did speak out against it, it didn't come from nowhere. Controversy never comes up with white Twilight and do you know why? No one ever says anything. The issue primarily comes up with black Twilight because with my rational thinking, I reason that because racism unfortunately still subsides within the American culture (and in other cultures too), morons can't keep they're opinionated and often times racist mouths shut, especially not on the internet. Like I said, black Twilight isn't the problem, nor is "black Twilight being controversial" a fact. The People who complain? They are a fact, an unfortunate fact, but a fact none the less, because they're consistent and provable.

2.) "I'm originally Mexican" If that's so than I apologize for the white nationalist comment, but that doesn't make what you say any less ridiculous and despicable.

3.) "it has none to do with how I view other races. More of how I associate a skin color with a personality." So you associating personalities to certain skin color's has nothing to do with how you view other races? *Sigh* It's the same thing, and whether you're capable of seeing that I don't know, but looking at a group of people and automatically having preconceived assumptions about them based solely on their skin color has EVERYTHING to do with how you view other races.

4.) "The most prominent personality of black people in the US is obvious." No, it isn't. (I'm sorry but that line of argument is so astonishingly poor and tragically idiotic that I have trouble finding the desire to even pick it apart) You're offensively stereotyping an entire group of people as having a certain personality based solely on your limited "observation" of them. Whether you have seen black people on the media or even met a few in real life, you are outrageously unqualified to even begin labeling each and every single one of them as anything.

5.) "The majority of people will associate a personality with the most appropriate skin color based on that color's most prominent personality." No, they don't. You see, intelligent people don't associate personality with skin color because it's completely stupid, we're better than that. Like I said, what you're describing is called stereotyping. It's when idiots look a wide group a diverse people and try to "sum them all up" with a few descriptions based on incredibly limited vague assumptions about the group of people.

6.) "You can't blame them, it's natural. They're not bad people because they do this." You're right, it is natural and people do do it. Inept people that is.

7.) "Essentially, by default, everyone is assumed white until clearly exemplified otherwise." Good. Fucking. God. You know what, your last paragraph I can sum up in one sentence: TAKE A GOD DAMN CLASS IN WORLD CULTURE.

8.) "I'm only pointing out what I've observed and trying to explain people's frustrations with this whole ordeal, these are in no way my own opinions." Then everything you've just said means absolutely nothing to me. What you alone have "observed" means nothing to anyone. The nerve of you evening stating that you alone can "explain people's frustrations" and say "this is how it works" is mind boggling and horrendously offensive.

"Now, why I say people being accused of racism is a problem is because the accusers probably don't actually think of whites as a blank slate because of whatever race they are or just because." You keep digging that hole man, you just keep right on digging yourself lower.

I'm done here, you have successfully crushed a minuscule portion of my faith in humanity for today.

@ #1024394 It's mostly a joke. Thing is a lot of bronies try to justify that Zecora is the only one who should be drawn as black due to... well, the fact that she's so African themed all around, then when we get to Twilight, they bitch and moan about it and mention Zecora. Honestly- I'd like to see SOMEONE troll these guys with a Caucasian, Spanish, or Asian Zecora. I mean, if the only thing stopping them from accepting the OTHER ponies as different races is using Zecora's overabundant african-ness as some gauge to say that the poor zebra's the only minority, then maybe it's high time we razzed them with a pic where she's a DIFFERENT RACE.

The only reason any of the ponies being any other color but white is because, there are still some pretty deep notions that whites still hold of other ethnicities. They may say they're not racist, but in reality saying one race is the norm IS RACIST! Why? Because that holds everyone else to a lesser degree as in "your not white, you can't join." Or "every ethnicity other than white is a blatant stereotype!". My question is, is the brony community becoming quasi-Jim Crow based community where every other ethnicity but white is left out? Cause if so, its about to lose a lot of members.

I personally saw her as black from the begging. Probably (again) due to the color scheme being purple just puts black in my mind. Now the others have color schemes that don't really go along with that specific skin color (Especially AJ and Rarity. AJ's would seem to be one closer to a tan and Rarity more pale). I could deal with black RD I guess and black Pinkie's ok too but by no way is it determined in my head via there personalities. Now I've dealt with a few black girls in my life and none have been the same. I've dealt with ones who were kinda dumb, valley dumb (there's a difference...smh) academic (almost exactly like Twilight. Especially Season 2 episode 3 Twilight...) and many more. It's easy to see how people would get a negative stigma on black people though (specifically black women) because the media usually displays fewer types of personalities for people who aren't white. Sadly people who have not had many experiences with people of different races and lack basic reasoning skills just accept what they're fed and regurgitate it. Their distaste for black Twilight is not one of hate but one of conditioning (at least if it's just due to their personality types.)

I read most of the comments, and personally, I can only think of one reason why this get's so much drama: it goes against what most people expect. I'm not going to say normal since that is a diverse word depending on who your talking too. It would be like if someone tried to pair Carrot Top with Screwball; you could do it, but expect a lot of o_O looks.

As for Zecora, the only reason Caucasian would be a problem, is because she is overwhelmingly African based (of course that could easily be hand waved by saying that her parents were foreigners, she lost them as a kid, and was raised by the locals). Point is still the same; most people have already determined what said race would be, just as most have already decided on their OTP, so, no, I don't think racism really plays into this all that much. Personally I'm against stuff like this, not because it's different, but that I suspect the artist is trying to be an attention whore. If you think she's black, fine, go for it, I never really had a problem with it up until this one pic that deliberately called attention to her race.

Also, to wrap up, I will say this; while not right, we do usually attribute certain ethic groups with certain personality types. It may not be right, but on some unconscious level, we all do this. This does not mean, of course, that they are some kind of Grand Dragon or whatever. Stereotypes are always going to be there, and it will have an affect on everybody both black and white, so in short, yes, everyone is racist. Pay attention to the end of the song for something semi-pony related.

If the link don't work do a Google search on "Avenue Q - Everyone is a Little bit Racist."
