I watched Sailor Moon back then too...
Rei was my favorite.
I also enjoyed DBZ.
Hell, when Toonami came around I loved it until the end. Ruroni Kenshin was my favorite show they aired.
Thanks for the nostalgia bomb. Now I have the transformation song stuck in my head.

>Sailor Moon.
Show with girls, changing into more fanservice-ish clothes, eh cool girls, kill aliens and not afraid of anything.

>DBZ

Show full of muscular men, having sweaty corporal fights. The bigger their muscles are, the more powerful they are and we wanted to be like them, we liked seeing strong muscular men fighting each other, really close sometimes.
But never homo.

Honestly, the stereotypes about Sailor Moon (F4NSERV1CE!!!11!1) and Dragon Ball (POWER LEVELZZZZ) are only there because most people haven't read the far superior manga.

Seriously, the Dragon Ball manga is actually well-paced and not bogged down with filler.

My thoughts on Sailor Moon were:
High school girl drama. Blech. Oh wait, superheroes? Okay. 10 minute transformation sequence. Zzzzz. Bad guy shows up. JAYSUS! What in the name of the Seventh Layer of Hell IS that?!?!?! Aaaand then back to the high school drama. I was like 6, so the lovey dovey stuff never appealed to me. What I DID watch the hell out of was Animaniacs, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, Road Rovers, and Swat Kats. Still do in fact when I can find em.

I watched Sailor Moon in 1996. I was only able to catch it intermittently, so the only bits of it I remember clearly were the godawful dubbing and the transformation sequences (for what it's worth, I am collecting the manga now). The show was apparently so gay, it made me realize I was straight (see aforementioned transformation sequences). Ami/Amy FTW.

TL;DR Sailor Moon Abridged is better than the actual anime. Oh, and Pony is surprisingly awesome.

@Jackarunda

You think you had it bad? We had to find our own dirt, ten miles every morning deep snow uphill both ways.

It wasn't even proper dirt, just granular phyllosilicates. It was still better than the sort you get these days, mind you.

I'll admit that I watched Sailor Moon. But it wasn't because I was really invested in the plot. It was because I was a young teenage boy and Sailor Moon wore a tiny mini skirt.

@Vree

You could find dirt? Luxury. When I was young, we had to walk twenty miles uphill both ways on sheets of ice to find rocks to watch. And they would never grow, of course, so we had to watch the dust settle on them and pretend we were watching them grow.

I watched all the Sailor Moon seasons that were aired on U.S. TV via Toonami and I'm not ashamed to admit it, although at times it felt like it was insulting the intelligence of everyone who watched it. I remember it was a big deal when seasons 3 and 4 finally got brought over because HOLY SHIT THE LESBIANS.

Fantasized about banging almost every single one of the sailor scouts. Still have a folder chock full of Sailor Moon hentai...

I never can understand people who only watch 1 of 2 anime of the 90's and think they are not closet case anime fans. Stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Kenshin and Sailor Moon has many really good spiritual successors

Sailor Moon is a legitimate classic. Lovable, stylish characters, fashion changes every episode, slice of life comedy before there was such a genre, the legendary anime director of the first season, revolutionary anime soundtrack, etc etc

People who make fun of Sailor Moon and DBZ are recognizing their contributions to anime history. They had their faults, but anime became modernized and better for it.

I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan. I'm really happy they've brought the manga back to the states. I'm not a huge fan of anime (but I don't dislike it, I have several I do like), but Sailor Moon is pretty much the definition of my youth.

Haters gonna hate.
