Notice that (aside from AppleBloom, who was working) there were no fillies in the cider episode? I'm taking that as a sure sign that the writers were at least hinting at it being alcoholic.

We watched the cider being made; all they did was crush the apples into juice. How could that be alcoholic?

Not that I mind people making it their headcanon that it's alcoholic, but I think it's silly to say that's what the writers/animators were implying.

As opposed to dying when one doesn't drink? Which also happens?

My only real issue with that is the process with which the Apples made the cider (as seen in the contest) doesn't seem to allow room for proper fermentation. (Though I'm not too knowledgeable on alcohol, so, I may just be wrong on that count.)

You could then argue 'magic!', with which I could only say that there's no real reason for there to be magical intervention for a process that has apparent naturalistic methods for it.

Not to mention that nopony seemed to get actually drunk or tipsy off of it. They just love the stuff.

It does have an alcoholic sort of look in the way it's served, though, what with the kegs and the beersteins.

It's also much funnier to imagine the cider is alcoholic.

fermentation is not instant, it can take weeks or months depending upon your methods and the particular juice being used.
so the product in the episode is definitively non-alcoholic (unless they magicked some alcohol into it somehow)

that being said,

i had some very good beer♪

Also, I thought actual cider was made from bruised apples. So if they're using untouched apples from a tree, wouldn't they be just making apple juice?

Or do I have that backwards?

This.
Beside, I don't know much about cider, but since they have a cider season that only happen once a year, it's not hard to assume that they grow some special kind of apple that makes the cider alcoholic by default.

'Sweet cider' is non-fermented, 'hard cider' is fermented. Two different kinds, folks.

...No, actually, that's an incredible assumption to make. Why assume that at all?

Also, what Jackarunda said, sort of. In the U.S. and Canada, there's a distinction between 'hard cider' and 'cider'. The latter isn't alcoholic. This show was made more or less in the U.S. and Canada. So, wouldn't they employ this kind of familiar terminology when writing the show?

I dunno, it just made sense to me. Since they had the zap apples for making the zap apple jam, it made sense to me that they had other kinds of special apples to make other specifics foods/drinks.
But once again, I know nearly nothing about cider making and fermentation, so I can't say for sure.

@Takino: XD throwbacks.

also, Jackarunda, there is hard cider, which is alcoholic, and far less sweet than regular cider.
