WARNING: EDITORIAL AHEAD!
Octavia and Vinyl Scratch are too different from each other to be compatible. People who don't share any of the same interests generally don't end up being happy together. Look at Applejack and Rarity, for example-- they are opposites, but they probably would not be attracted to each other, and their personalities aren't compatible. Rarity puts a lot of importance in appearances, she likes keeping things tidy, and she has ambitions of one day living in the big city. Applejack on the other hand has already decided that the city is not for her, and that her place is on the farm-- she's folksy, physical, and doesn't sweat the little things. They are good friends, but they were in a relationship they would not be compatible. Like Rarity, Octavia is classy and sophisticated, and is typically avatar for classical and acoustic music. She probably would enjoy spending an evening at a cultured show, a nice restaurant, or at home with a good book. Vinyl Scratch on the other hand is very edgy and contemporary, and is an avatar for electronic music. She's the kind of character who probably likes spending her nights dancing at clubs or loud concerts, or at home tinkering with her audio rig and gear. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why they'd get tired of each other if they were more than just friends. Octavia and Vinyl Scratch as room mates can open the door for some good humor since in that case they don't necessarily have to like each other to be stuck in the same house, but the idea that they're "soulmates" is flimsy at best. |

@Dumb_Rock: The people who "fall in love" despite having very little in common are one of the biggest reasons for the 50% divorce rate. Nowadays people make very little distinction between physical attraction and love, and thus they end up in relationships for the wrong reasons. |

@TooOldForThisShow: That pretty much robs Octavia of what makes her special, though, and that's actually a perfect example of why OctaScratch has so many vocal detractors.
More often than not, the solution to making the two more compatible is to make Octavia learn to be more like Vinyl Scratch-- in other words, leave behind her "stuck up" ways and learn how to be more "hip and modern." I've seen pictures where Octavia is using an electric cello and playing backup for Vinyl Scratch's techno, but I've never seen one where Vinyl Scratch dons formal attire and ditches her turntable for an acoustic instrument. That would be out of character for her, and it's no less out of character for Octavia to switch over to techno from classical. Some fans just want to have their cake and eat it too-- they want Octavia and Vinyl Scratch to be a couple, but they don't want to accept that the only way for it to work is to change them. At least with Vinyl Scratch and Neon Lights neither of them has to sacrifice part of their identity or go OOC to be with the other. |

I like to think they find some more similarities, devotion to music despite their different tastes.
And though I like it I won't rabidly defend it. I mean I have two fics to read on my list that are Lyra and Octavia and Luna and Octavia Luna Octavia could actually work pretty well I think. Classy as FUCK! |

@HeinousActsZX: I think it's safe to assume people like Octavia because of how much she embodies her style of music and overall classiness, and people like Vinyl Scratch because of how well she embodies techno and the raver scene. If "character development" means that one of them has to give up some of that, it should be pretty understandable why there are people against shipping them together. They want Octavia to be the classical music pony, and they want Vinyl Scratch to be the Techno pony.
I'd compare them to an irish car bomb-- maybe mixing their styles together is fun for a few seconds while you chug it, but any longer than that and the Bailey's starts to curdle and it ends up tasting like bad cheese. Likewise, juxtaposing how utterly different Octavia and Vinyl Scratch are is fun for the occasional gag, but when you mix their music it's ultimately going to be a techno techno song with some cello thrown in, and a relationship just plain wouldn't work without fundamentally changing at least one of the characters. Their overall aesthetics are more conflicting than they are complimentary. |

So, we're having big shipping arguments over characters without any canon lines, characterizations, or names?
My only problem with the Vinyl/Octavia pairing is that it's... a bit oversaturated. Someone also made the point about how it seems it's always Octavia changing to be more like Vinyl and never, say, Vinyl learning classical music. I'm aware I've heard that complaint before. Blimey, bronies take shipping way too seriously sometimes. |
