I like to think that the planet that the ponies are on is the terraformed Mars at the end of the Getter Robo manga.
But that's just me. |

Well in Lesson Zero the sun is shown to move around the sky, and if it moves consistently over the whole planet there would be no problem with irregular days and whatnot. Luna not lowering the moon could simply mean that she parked it above equestria and wouldn't rotate it, so half the planet was freezing and the other half was burning. |

Now, you left one lurking variable.
MAGIC. |

It makes you wonder how things worked before unicorns were around to raise the sun and moon. |

Something to consider is that it seems the ponies have the same constellations as our earth.
I was considering Celestia's power and believe that perhaps she doesnt raise the sun, but rotates the earth. We call it sun rise too, even though its us moving around it. #1002024 You have to take Twilight's POV in lesson zero with a grain of salt. |

^Indeed; case in point; while the sun was ticking, the windmill was tocking- we can assume that Twilight is hallucinating this.
RE: Squares around other planets Perhaps not; look at any good Earth star chart, you'll find that the sky is divided in, if I remember right, 88 regular and irregular, mostly-retangular, 2-D polygons; the purpose of which is to map the night sky along the 88 most discernable ancient constellations; eg, you tell someone to look in the direction of Orion, that means for them to not also look at Orion, but the are surrouning it, but not too close to a neigboring constellation, like Gemini or Canis Major. If it helps to think of it thsi way; imagine like each constellation is a state, with the main constellations being the main cities, and the darkness between being undeveloped areas; but by knowing which state, you know where to start looking. |

So, would you be able to see the Sun if you were on the Moon in Equestria's solar system? |
