Little known fact: The famous "It's better to be feared than loved" line only applies if you can't have both, according to Machiavelli himself. I don't know if this is that quote, but it seems to be the most popular one used.

You guys do know "Il Principe" was satire, right? Machiavelli was a major advocate for democracy.
(It's not his fault the bulk of humanity is sociopathic enough to take that thing seriously...)
