"... I've been aging it for months..."
That line was weird. I mean, how do you age a rock? But then I thought of something. Spike's Fire Ruby was a symbolism of his feelings for Rarity. He's had feelings for her since episode 1 and held on to them for as long as he did (aging the ruby). When it matured, Spike found the courage to give her his heart. Rarity valued his feelings so much that she kept it close to her body and was willing to protect it with her life. He didn't really confessed during the fall scene at all. Spike did it almost at the very beginning of the episode. Or so I would like to think... :) |

^ That's kinda nice, but what about Spike wanting to eat the Fire Ruby? Does that mean he wants to eat his feelings for Rarity? :p |

^ Or, maybe the fastest way to a dragon's heart is through his stomach! Or something like that. |

Best excuse I can think of: he sleeps on it, and his firey body heat tempers it, sorta like glass. |
