I'm pretty convinced by now that the animators are getting crap past the radar. They must've put Caramel in here to say "yes, he is gay", but then at the same time say he has a girlfriend so that it looks to most people like he's straight.
If this is so, it greatly disappoints me. As much as I want to see a canon gay character (or at the very least homosexuality actually being confirmed to exist), this kind of hiding of it would mean that there never will be an officially gay character. |

@Nebbie - It's a kids show though. With how much trouble they got just for giving Derpy an identity, do you think they want to deal with the imminent shitstorm some super-conservative parents are going to cause when they see that on a kids show? They are just playing it safe and trying to avoid potential controversy.
Anyways, seeing Dr. Whooves/Derpy and Bon Bon/Lyra made me smile |

Which is exactly why I want to see an officially gay character. Avoiding controversy is something so many kids shows do, and in doing so they let conservatives (no, not super-conservatives, it's still hugely popular for even moderates to hate on gay people) control what kids see. I want to live to see a generation of kids who grow up seeing gay people in shows meant for kids, and not presumed heterosexuality all the time, so that they can be more tolerant. |

Only if they do it repeatedly. Also, Derpy appeared as a filly once, so it was assumed she time travelled with Dr. Hooves (note the name...). Caramel in here is less certain, but it looks like Derpy/Dr. and Lyra/BonBon were intentional, so it makes sense something is going on there. |
