Allegrezza doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. I think that if it was realistic, Vinyl and Octavia might be friends under the right circumstances, but not close friends, let alone lovers. Yeah, some people will wave around the whole "opposites attract" thing, but the fact of the matter is that not all opposites are complimentary, and I don't think Octavia and Vinyl Scratch would be compatible with each other.
What I really don't like about a lot of fics involving an Octavia / Vinyl relationship is that they usually solve the compatibility problem by making Octavia learn how to be "more hip and modern" like Vinyl Scratch, with the "sophisticated" things Vinyl learns from Octavia being trivial at best. This even carries over into most of the attempts I've heard at musical mashups between the two ponies. By default, they are techno pieces with a some cello thrown in, because the people making them are generally more interested in Vinyl Scratch than Octavia. It's easy to put a little bit of Cello into a techno song, but as soon as you put techno into a classical song, it stops being classical and becomes techno. I like both characters, but I don't like how many people have postulated them as being part of a "set" (romantic or otherwise) rather than just contrasting the two occasional as a gag. The only way for a relationship between the two would work is if one or both of them changes to be more like the other, and I don't like that idea at all. I'd compare these two to a luxury car and a hotrod-- they are wildly different aesthetics, and trying to make one be more like the other just doesn't work. If you paint flames on a Mercedes and give it a big chrome intake scoop, it's not a luxury car anymore. If you take away all of the mod work from a custom Mustang and paint it silver, it's not a hot rod anymore. They're two wildly different aesthetics that don't really belong together, and trying to make one be more like the other is a disservice to both. |

^ Chill man. We get it. They aren't compatible. Which might be why people ship them together. Also, most fics between Octavia and Vinyl Scratch are comedies. I haven't read one myself though I really want to. I would imagine their differences make for great banter between the two. and honestly I think that having a playful banter war with a girl counts as intimacy of sorts. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. |
