This episode has made me realize that I haven't read a book in over 8 months. I should probably get on that, anyone have any recommendations?

If you've never read Watership Down, I highly recommend it. Also: Stranger in a strange land and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Oh jeez. Well! Here I go with my personal favorites!

Dresden Files: Highly reccomended for everyone, especially if you haven't seen the lack luster TV show. Its about a wizard private investigator who helps the police with supernatural threats and just goes bigger and more awesome from there. Vampire sex clubs. Zombies created from bongo drums. And the main character accidentally setting shit on fire all the time. Plus there's a lot! I don't think I need to tell you to read them in order.

Bartimaeus trilogy: A nice wonderful tale of a young boy and his bound demon. Who hates him. And is snarkily sarcastic. And narrates and can think in footnotes. Lots of fun.

Mistborn Trilogy (fuckin' love trilogies): The Evil Overlord has already won and the world looks like Mordor. Time for some metal-magic protagonists to step up to the plate. The author really knows how to make some endearing characters and create a world. Saying any more would probably spoil it.

^Dude YES. BARTIMAEUS.
For that, basically think of Discord, just as a jinni/genie/demon/whatever instead of draconequus.

Also, Hunger Games is supposed to be pretty good. Might as well read that before the movie comes out...

the City of Amber series is one of my favorites, at least for the first five books.

Anything written by Asimov

I'll have to think of more...

Agree with Anon 973 - Dresden Files is FANTASTIC. Also, if you're just getting started, it should keep you occupied for a while. Also, all of CogWeaver's suggestions are good.

Dash acts like a douche like she does every time she gets an episode centered on her.

No backlash this time...everybody loves her.

I'm personally working my way through the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series and its sequel series "Heroes of Olympus". It's a very interesting take on if the ancient Greek gods moved from Greece and started living in North America.

If that's not your thing, I'm also reading the "Ranger's Apprentice" series. The first few books are about the protagonist Will's training to become a Ranger (spy, scout, and if need be, assassin and warrior.) It takes place in the medieval era...and I suck at descriptions.

Just go look them up on TvTropes.

Well apparently this episode has made everyone everywhere want to read because seriously every book I looked up is checked out. My library has 4 copies of the first Dresden Files book and they are all checked out. Everything Vanner said is checked out, everything 630 said is checked out, I mean god damn. There are 17 copies of Hunger Games and they are all either checked out or on hold.

Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain series is terrific fantasy; although it's written to be child-friendly, it's certainly suitable for adults too. The titles in the series are The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer, and The High King.

I've enjoyed basically everything written by the following authors:

Piers Anthony
Anne McCaffrey
Robert Heinlein
C.S. Friedman
Robert Jordan(most people just know him for the Wheel of Time books, but he did some good, gritty work with Conan too)

Someone mentioned the Amber series. Luckily, there's a single giant compilation called The Great Book of Amber, which contains every novel in one go. It's also useful if you forget your training weights.

Discworld, baby. Can't go wrong with Terry Pratchett. I'd recommend either The Color of Magic or Guards, Guards if you're unfamiliar with the series.

Hee! This poster tickled me. I never thought I'd see the day... :D

For those who want something to read, read any of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. If you like silly British humor, you'll love the books!

I've found you don't really need to read them in any particular order. They're all so much fun. :D

@Shawa, funny you should mention 'Garp'. The scene where Rainbow Dash is bouncing a ball off the hospital walls is almost certainly a reference to a scene in 'The World According to Garp'.
