Saw this on EqD, sighed it back there. I know next to no one actually hates Derpy, but it's still a little overkill to have a few chaps stack up against 20,000 pro Derpies.

What exactly is the big stink over Derpy, anyway? Is it how she behaved, sounded or something she said?
In -my- book, I was bothered by her statement of "I just don't know how it happened". Had they changed -that- line alone, I'd have been completely fine with the rest of her portrayal. Nobody else has heard that, and also the term "derp" started on South Park, so how's about not spreading false info, m'kay? @Anon533/552, here's the story, as best as I can figure: *inhale* A few butthurt fans (and maybe some hypersensitive parents) thought Derpy's canon voice was a slur against the mentally handicapped, calling her "ableist" (whatever the hell that means) and offensive. Haters claimed to have forced Amy Keating Rogers - who I have heard has a mentally-disabled child - to apologize for the scene, but there has been no evidence of this - although she admitted to getting half a dozen hatemails, compared to 30 positive ones. Tabitha St. Germain admitted that when she did the voice, she had no idea Derpy was a girl, and modelled the voice after a neighbour's son who'd had a massive growth spurt and was really clumsy. A couple days later, "The Last Roundup" got yanked from iTunes, but remained up on both The Hub's site and Hasbro's video portal, and are still there (this suggests that pulling the episode was Apple's call, not Hasbro's). The "offending" episode was also confirmed to still be on the DVD streeting in three weeks. A couple days after that, all the Derpy merch on WeLoveFine was renamed to "Pony", "Ditzy", or nothing at all. After the "Save Derpy" petitions started, Tabitha St. Germain wrote a Derpy-themed blog entry where all occurrences of "Derpy" were replaced with underscores, but it's likely that Tabs was just trolling (she apparently has a history of that). Fans freaked out that Hasbro was going to change Derpy's name or pull her from the show entirely, despite no evidence. State of the Derp today: the "Derpy" name has been restored to most of the WeLoveFine product pages, but the episode still hasn't been put back up on iTunes. *phew!* |
