Earth can be both a proper noun and a common noun just like "moon" is.

But, earth as a common noun would mean "dirt" or "ground" and it makes no sense for Pinkie to say something like "The soil we're standing on is round. There is no up or down."

Tell us something we don't know. It's obvious it's set on Earth.

My theory is that Equestria is an amalgamation of our Europe (like an European Union ruled by a constitutional monarchy) set in Central Europe, and with Canterlot and Ponyville, among other cities, set in Switzerland. The Mild West could probably be in Spain (this is just at the top of my head, nothing I really try to look deeper into) and... eh, that's all I have.

My theory? Same planet, but on a different existential plane. In other words, they are existing at the exact same time we are - no apocolypse or anything - and we simply can't reach them.

Since the existential plane is seperate to ours, they have more control over theirs than we do of ours (they can control the weather, sun and moon, etc). Because they have easier lives being able to change things like that, they havn't needed to develop technology as quickly (which is why they still have steam trains), however present-day "Earth" with Equestria is also present day Earth here.

I think it's like the whole Santa Claus thing. He/they live in a far-off place that shares this world, but is inaccessible to us. He/they are aware of this world, but choose to interact with it in very slight ways.

Santa Claus hands out gifts once a year while ponies broadcast on our airwaves and help us learn about friendship.

Oh, well if that's how we go, then I'm perfectly fine with that

"...We could have told you that our character paused to strap on his quonglishes before setting out on a walk of seven vorks along the main gleebish of his native znoob, and everything would have seemed ever so much more thoroughly alien. But it also would have been ever so much more difficult to make sense out of what we were saying, and that did not seem useful."
— Excerpt of the "To the Reader" letter at the very start of Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg's Nightfall, Spectro Publishing's extended edition.

Considering the show's target audience, I believe compromises were made regarding naming the planet or showing constellations or what-not....

^That is a good point, they could throw around sudo- and near-to sci-fi things with their world's construction, history, etc, because it'd be expected that we could understand all of that.

The target audience, on the other hand, while whether or not they could actually get it is uncertain, it's at least expected that they wouldn't find it interesting like we would.
