It's got some psychologically interesting aspects.
Twilight has a condescending streak. Spending time with her friends has done her a world of good, but it comes across in her interactions sometimes that she doesn't think of herself as a normal pony - she's above the crowd. The way she basically replaced her real parents in her head with Celestia (at least inasmuch as we've seen) is a very common trait exhibited by gifted children who want to disassociate themselves with their mundane parents. She doesn't know it yet, but she wants to walk in the world of gods and goddesses, master magic far beyond mere mortals, prove that she's a prodigy. In that sense, being romantically attracted to divine beings (which she sees as closer to being her 'peers') over regular ponies makes sense. For comparison, consider Celestia, who's basically the divine mother of the pony race (possibly literally but certainly in practice, as we've seen). She expresses motherly (that is, from a position of superiority) love for her many subjects, but the idea of being romantically attracted to any of them implies peerdom, which none of them have. Which is why there's no one it would seem appropriate for her to love in the cast, except ironically Discord. |
