Oh, by the way, uh, I should clarify that I don't think we should respond to overreaction with overreaction. Bashing Yamino would be fun and all, but seriously. The Hub put Derpy in the show with the best of intentions. Sensitive people complained with the best of intentions. Fans who disagree respond with the best of intentions.

Okay, first of all, that's not true. Some people did dislike Snails' exaggerated "idiot" status, for the same reasons they disliked Derpy's even more exaggerated "idiot" status.
Second, they're not the same. Snails wasn't limited to a couple of minutes, and his portrayal didn't consist entirely of him doing "dumb" things. He was not a ball of pure, elemental stupidity; he made a dumb, decision, but it made sense from a characterization point of view. "Stupid" is not a character trait; it is the absence of a character trait. |

Uh...actually, Snails's portrayal kind of did consist entirely of doing stupid things. One of which was to very nearly get the entire cast killed by an angry space bear. |

No. He also fangirled over Trixie. The bear thing was stupid, yes, but it wasn't just "a character does a dumb thing for no good reason, because he's dumb"; it was a logical extension from his and Snips' other character traits. |

And I would say it contains more merit than does not contain merit. A character spoke in a voice that some consider to be indicative of being unintelligent/uneducated (or as I considered Derpy's voice to be, more like Rudolph in that claymation Christmas special). Being dim-witted is Snails' -primary- character trait, even if it's not his only one. Derpy might be dim-witted, or she might be clumsy. It's unlikely that we'll ever know, now.
Derpy got this negative attention because she was special. If she had nothing to do with the fandom, I doubt many people would have paid her any mind, as they didn't with Snails. The people who complained about dim-wittedness in MLP should have had something to say about Snails, but did not. |
