Well majority of people that complained were people that have no idea about the fandom and thought it was possibly a bad message to children. So many fans are outraged by the name being changed. Now people that did have relatives with disabilities did complain a bit on faust's deviant and instead of explaining that derpy wasn't mean to be offensive a lot of bronies whines about it and bashed them.

Fans complained? What fans? Those fuckers aren't fans. Normally I'm not one to get into the whole "what is a 'true fan'" crap, but seriously, no fan would complain about this GIFT! Heinous had it nailed in his second comment, other fandoms would envy us for getting such a shout out, then be disgusted by how some reacted to it. I can understand why iTunes had to take the episode down. They have no idea what's going on. All they know is that there are complaints about an episode being offensive, so they have to take it down while they investigate. Hopefully they'll see and realize "ok, some people are just being stupid" and put it back up. Hasbro and Studio B have no reason to apologize, and hopefully this will all be cleared up soon.

There are a lot of fansof my little pony that grew up with the older generations as kids that watch gen 4 with their own children and seeing a character like derpy can cause a whole hell of confusion. http://comments.deviantart.com/4/1603670/2383278736 here an example of an angry parent who is upset but not butt hurt voicing her concern which pretty much clears and makes sense. I am kind of surprised the episode got yanked off iTunes. Heh, you'd think this would happen with "Feeling Pinkie Keen" or "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" and the controversy those two spread with their supposed morals. Instead it's just a clutzy gray pegasus. Oh well. I wonder what they'll do about the episode? Ban it entirely? Re-animate the opening segment? Really, though? The shout-out exists, and now that the episode's being suppressed, it'll just be spread further. If Hasbro's really following through on this, then honestly, they can save face all they want. The shout-out exists, we know it exists, and the episode will probably be circulated like anything else. Yeah, we'll never see Derpy again as anything more than a background pony, but, hey, what were the odds of her re-appearing in a speaking role, anyhow? We haven't seen Pip or Luna since "Luna Eclipsed", we probably won't see the likes of Cherry Jubilee or the Flim Flam brothers again, Discord's all but confirmed to be gone for good - honestly, a one-shot was really the best reality we could have hoped for, given the nature of the cartoon. I'm happy Derpy got her two minutes, despite all the backlash. All this hub-bub over it doesn't mean anything, because I know it can't actually affect that moment we heard her named and speaking, and thanks to the internet, it's not going to go away anytime soon, despite whatever Hasbro does to their product.

"the fandom" isn't a bloc. you can like the show, you can think the show is great, and still think different things about it than the person sitting next to you. it's possible for human beings to come to contradictory conclusions about what is morally right. also, human beings who have been regularly mocked and ostracized tend to be raw about it. if you give someone a hearty slap on the back, and it turns out they have a sunburn, and they get mad at you for it... well, no, it wasn't your fault exactly since you didn't know he was sunburned, but you can't blame him for getting mad!

Wait guys. Does We Love Fine even sell officially licensed merchandise? Most of the stuff on their site looks like artsy fan designs and a lot of unlicensed stuff. It could be the name of the shirt was changed to avoid legal issues with the actual owner of the character, namely Hasbro. Best case scenario if anything does change in the show is maybe they re-dub her voice to something less... questionable. In reality if they do change anything it'll be editing out whatever scenes they already had of her for the rest of season two. Which sucks.

@zancrow: there's a perception that "derp" is a word about mental disabilities. it's a recent perception, and not really a correct one (since the etymology and nearly all subsequent use had it refer to momentary silly behavior - brainfarts, basically). but it's there. I'm not making excuses. I'm explaining, and trying to argue that there are no villains in this scenario. just people coming from different places, who have reached different conclusions.

Just wanted to write something: The whole thing about disabled relatives bugs me. You see, there was this one thing with Family Guy, in which a girl with Down Syndrome dated Chris. And being Family Guy many jokes about diaabled people were made. A woman took offence to that, because her daughter has Down Syndrome and made her opinion public. And you know how that turned out? The voice actor for the girl with Down Syndrome said, herself having Down Syndrome: "Grow some humor!" BAM. I think we can learn a thing or two about that, because in the end it's a goddamn cartoon show, in which nothing is to be taken seriously!

ostracism is a valid tool. but I think it is only suited for when people do something that causes harm in the real. talking about ostracizing "oh, twilight can't be black"... eh, I can see it. it reflects racism, which is a real thing, a real problem in the world. in this case? the production team did something cool for the fandom. that isn't changing. and whatever they decide to do with the episode in question, the original version has already been released. it will exist forever. if something gets removed, that's not really doing any harm. it's just a little disappointing. but, of course, everyone should feel free to choose who they associate with. if WR wants to have nothing to do with people who thought this was an issue, well, that's his prerogative. but I don't think it's the right move, and I don't want to see the fandom as a whole go that way.
