Most of them you unlock through leveling up. Which is easy since you only need 600 EXP for each level for a while, and you can get 100 each time you fight a battle in either arcade or quick battle.
I think there's other ways, but I haven't been paying that much attention. |

Story mode gets you stuff unlocked easy and by the time you get it done you half why to level 5. |

Fair warning though. It really lack in Single player modes, and the story mode, I felt, was meh. But it's gameplay is the best I feel since 2.
So, best advice is look more into it, just to be sure. |

I dunno about characters, I was more thinking "Chronicles of the Sword" and the whole store system u_u
I played SC3 solely for CotS! It was its own game almost, I loved it. |

Well, depending on who they replaced, I think it makes perfect sense, considering how old some of the characters were getting. I mean, Ivy was in her 50's by IV... |
