If they hadn't been greedy they could've formed a partnership. On entity supplies and distributes the apples, the other entity makes and distributes the juice.
And one of the brothers wouldn't be having a mild seizure. |

Apple family should have haggled more. |

The deal they offered would have run the Apples out of business. Producing 3 times as much product while getting 1/4 of the profit per unit means money lost. But we don't know what expenses the Flim-Flam brothers had, either. For all we know, a 50/50 split would have left them unable to maintain their machine. |

@CallMeAll
That was still a better deal than selling those apples at the market at 4 bits a bucket (call of the cutie). Considering each tree seems to be a full bucket and that each tree made a full barrel with the brothers contraption, and that the barrel sells at least 19 mugs at 2 bits a mug, that would give 9,5 bits for barrel to the Apples, against 4 if they sold those apples at market (assuming they sold bad apples too). I say it was a fair offer. The Apples should have negotiated if they disagree. |

@anon504 i think apple bloom was just a bad sellmare there surely a bucket costs way more than that |

@strawberry_mask
I think price would be the first thing Applejack would teach her, how can Applejack expect her to help with sales if she doesn't even know the prices? I don't know, IMHO, disregarding that price to support the theory that the flimflam are evil con-men sounds as bas as disregarding canon to support any theory... |

"That was still a better deal than selling those apples at the market at 4 bits a bucket (call of the cutie)."
a) Wasn't that what Applebloom said? Since she's obviously not too savvy about business stuff, that could've very well been some random number she came up with. b) It could also be that they have a a certain, fixed ammount of apples set aside for the cider production, which they use up and sell over a certain period. That way, the proposed deal would only mean exhausting their supplies more quickly and earning less overall. |

@AlCapony
I have to partially agree with (b), that makes sense. But... Since they had already maximized their cider production, and that cider kept them going through winter, I believe that cider was their most profitable product, and since they had already used all their fixed amount of apples for ciders, all other apples would have been used in less profitable ways. Okay, maybe they would make pie's out of them, and that could make, I dunno 10 bits per tree... Anyway, Granny Smith was more than willing to give away for free the entire South Field to someone just on asking, I think they had apples to spare on that deal... About (a), I believe it seemed like AB worked there with AJ for some time, and AJ would have taught her the prices, at the very least. |

The moral of that episode was a bit dubious, but it's an excellent tool for trolling Randian libertarians. |

@#950546: When it comes down to it the fact is Applejack said in canon that accepting that deal would ruin them, and I'm assuming she knows her own business better than you do. |

Here's my take on it: Flim and Flam probably designed their banner before they even came to Ponyville, meaning they intended to run the Apples into the ground from the get-go.
If they were ingenius enough to design the Super Cider Squeezy by themselves, they porbably calculated on their own that a 1/4 profit would ruin Sweet Apple Acres. They were just counting on the 'hicks' being dumb enough to fall for it. |
