Oh. THAT explanation. Cteno is a pony who was murdered and her body mutilated and thrown into the trash by her murder. A garbage man working at the dump opened a microwave that was housing her bones and they fell into a vat of toxic waste. They reacted in someway to form Cteno's slime body. |

I really dont understand the appeal of this character at all. It's completely ridiculous...if anybody else came up with/drew it they'd be laughed away, but because the art is good, people love it. That's some biased crap, you guys! If she can have a magical slime pony that can fly and break apart and still survive and grow extra appendages and allsorts of asinine stuff, why is it such a life-destroying offense if anyone else has a silly pony? :| |

Because filtering her doesn't allow for serious discussion on the concepts of OCs.
For other OCs, any sort of power at all can get them instant hatred from everybody. But people accept this one and in fact embrace it to the point of making fanart! Fanart! OF A FAN CHARACTER! Where does the distinction lie? Why is Cteno okay, with her magical morphing invulnerable completely made up design that looks 100% different from every other pony ever, but a pony with, say, two different colored eyes would get shot down and downvoted to hell? |

Because of Holy Shit Quotient. Cteno kinda transcends Special Snowflake Syndrome, therefore people don't go: oh another mary sue, recolor, OC; they go: WHAT THE BUCK IS THAT, MYBRAINISFULLOFBILLIONSANDBILLIONSOFFUCK. AND. I. LOVE IT! And also comedy. And also, also she interacts with Surprise (who is the perfect balance of Canon, Fanon, and OC bound together with CRAZY AWESOME.) |

That would be because Cteno can't "do anything" without the appropriate mass exchange. She can't fly because she is made of goo. She is literally just the front half of a pony that was in a microwave for whatever godforsaken reason. Besides, don't you know nuclear waste gives you mutant powers?
And the reason she's liked is because she has a good personality. It's the same reason people like Weaver's Ice Pack and Carnifex's Velvet. |

I honestly believe it's the quality of the art that the creator produces. Slugbox has pretty designs. Another reason could also be the catering to fetishes and fanservicing. (Socks, panty shots, references to popular pony memes) I do think the image dump was an attempt to gain more awareness for the OC and its tumblr. |

Cteno has all the makings of a mary sue until you start looking into the little quirks that almost make her blessed with suck. Water dissolves her, Surprise obliterates her quite often, she can get frozen easily, and a couple of other quirks that make her ability anything but what a mary sue would have. |

Cteno's not some SUPERPOWERFUL AWESOME AMAZING character who's better than the canon cast at everything ever and can go Super Saiyan 5 and can totally kill Perfect Cell with one hand.
She doesn't have any "powers". She has a shapeshifting ability, which is highly limited (has to fit her skeleton inside, stick to her natural colors), she doesn't have full control over (colors shift while she's asleep), and is just for show, not actual utility (Surprise made her wings, but she couldn't actually fly with them). She also isn't invulnerable. She might be unkillable, or at least not easily killed. But she's quite easily harmed, and she needs time and matter to regenerate. She's an actually-unique design, rather than picking some standard-issue "unique" trait like heterochromia from the Mary Sue Toolbox that every uncreative middle-schooler on the internet draws from. She's mostly just a cute pony who largely keeps to herself and is just trying to figure herself out. She just happens to be made of slime. If you don't like her, god bless, go forward, who the hell cares? |
