I went ahead and wrote on her DeviantArtas "~harle1012000" to try and explain my thoughts. A lot of people seem to be doing the same, but I noticed some complaints about the voice. Still, mostly everyone said Derpy was adorable. I hope there aren't any changes :(

Do I think the way Derpy was portayed in the cartoon horribly egregious in nature? Absolutely not. Can I see where people can take some offense yes?
But not to the point that we've reached of making petitions and getting at each other's throats over it. There have been far worse characters who have been guilty of worse portrayals of Derpy here. And quite frankly it's criminal how everyone is beginning to act here. I won't call those who were offended by Derpy "Butthurt" but I do think people could stand to have a little more thicker skin in a situation like this. |

Offended anon, stop pretending to be shocked that most people are not offended and that your opinion is some scientific fact. Having mentally challenged or just wacky characters does not change anything. They are just a comedian relief in the shows, not some Mary Sue the fandom keeps pushing. Accepting that such characters could be used comedically is not insensitive. In fact, it should be the other way as it simply accepts the character and does not pretend they do not exist. Derpy holding multiple jobs is a positive indicator. |

The creative staff definitely does not deserve that. Not even an iota.
South Park had Timmy and Jimmy and while the 'outrage' was there a bit, people just accepted them as a part of a whole cast. Ed Edd and Eddy (the studio that made this cartoon made that as well) had three absolutely mentally retarded characters and yet it was just for fun and it's not like the cartoon's world paid much attention for it. Like some have said, as long as they aren't castigated or made fun of in the cartoon, it should be fine. Like how Derpy isn't seen as an invalid but actually holds jobs, that's kind of an affirming thing. There are mentally ill, slow and clumsy people in real life. The best way to deal with them is to treat them almost as much the same as we would normal people. To castigate them is wrong obviously. But to be extremely pandering to them is kind of to dehumanize them almost like they're some kind of a pet or a sub-human. It's not an easy distinction to make, but I don't really see any ponies go all nuts about her. It all just relies on cartoon morality in that it is portrayed a lot simpler in cartoons. Derpy, even if she has mental handicap and is clumsy, is perfectly fine the way she is. If she becomes a normal character, they'll find a way to integrate her clumsiness into a teachable lesson. I think every critic needs to have some TRUST in the amazing cartoon studio instead of constantly bullying them like this. |
