^Well case in point the "Smith" and "Rich" families, which they were refered to in said episodes. However it is blatently clear that this is not the case with every single pony or their families. I wish there was something in the canon though to put this to rest. In the mean time we have the wonderful people on the production team. :) |

My take on it is that instead of surnames, ponies mainly rely on theme naming to note family relation. See, of course, the aforementioned Apple family. Sometimes, this takes the form of what we would consider surnames, such as in the Cake family. We had Stinkin' Rich and Filthy Rich, but Diamond Tiara isn't named Rich. |
