I'll stick with North American cider. As in, no alcohol.

I have seen to many comments about cider not being alcoholic so I had to do this.

So cider is basically just apple juice in the US? That's sad.

No, it's actually a lot different than apple juice. It's a lot tastier, and is traditionally more seasonal.

it's not apple juice god dammit

apple juice is lame and stupid and tastes awful, cider is great and "thick" and tastes amazing

"oh well it's a liquid made from apples therefore it is apple juice" NO

NO D:<

Funny thing is that where I grew up, I live in the U.S., we called it "real cider" not "hard cider".

Juice. Boring, clear, gross, lame.

Cider. Amazing, opaque, delicious, awesome.

And sometimes they bake the cider into donuts. I've never seen someone do that with apple juice.

Sometime after Prohibition the word cider came to mean unfiltered, unfermented apple juice. In current U.S. usage the term is used for both fresh-pressed juice and fermented products, although the latter are often called hard cider. Apple juice, meanwhile, refers to a clear, filtered, pasteurized apple product.

@Fuzzy: That's some heavily filtered apple juice you got there. Unfiltered it looks like this:

Pretty close to non-alcoholic cider. Sure it won't taste the same but different apple juice brands don't have the same taste either.

Oh well, water is the only non-alcoholic drink for me.

This.
If they use rule of funny to justificate newborn babies flying and using magic, and leaving two ponies stranded on the middle of a desert, then I'm also going to use rule of funny to say that they're all alcoholics.

They're using beer mugs... alcohol!

The fact the it's was sold in beer mug, had a thick froth on top (just like beer) and the "happy" expressions the customer made seem to incidicate that it's hard cider.
But in the end it's a kid show, we saw fillies in the row and we have a comment from Faust who said that ponies don't booze up. So it's probably non-alcoholic cider.

What else would they use if not a mug? Ordinary glasses are pretty hard to use for earth ponies and pegasi. Glasses are also far more expensive and fragile than primitive mugs made of wood and metal.

I gotta say Pinkie's reaction made me think it's alcoholic, but all of the reactions can easily explained by "it tasted really good".

I made this from the number of people i saw saying cider, not the cider in the show, is not alcoholic but "hard cider" is, I'm pointing this out as a way for people that think that to know that cider is in fact alcoholic in real life but "hard cider" is a term for it, not that non-alcoholic cider is the real cider.

See, in England (and this is where I got confused as well) we only have cider, which is alcoholic:

And scrumpy, which is even more alcoholic:

NightJack, the West Country really wouldn't want to hear that. That's like comparing their coarse ales to a lager. XD

Do you have an analogue for scumble as well?

Cider is unfiltered and unprocessed apple juice, that's what allows it to ferment.

Once it's processed into apple juice it's too "clean" to do anything with.

If it's clear and yella, you've got juice there, fella!

If's it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town!

Now, there are two exceptions...

To ruin the fun by paying attention to detail, it must have been non-alcoholic; it was drunk right after being pressed from the apples.

In other countries depicting adults (even cartoon animal ones) enjoying an alcoholic beverage wouldn't be a problem.

Scumble is just Discworld-ese for, well, Applejack surely? The freeze-distilled stuff, only... more so. And more dangerous. Freeze distillation concentrates all the alcohols from the fermentation, so it's not too much of a stretch by pterry.

because all i saw were apples being crushed into juice in seconds

Cider starts to ferment remarkably quickly. Even if it was supposed to be non-alcoholic, after sitting in those barrels all day, it would have had a little kick to it anyway.

Since I don't drink cider, hard or not and only drink beer, whisky, scotch and brandy, I'm not too worried about any of this.
