Big Mac contradicts his statement actually, Because Rarity herself uses her ability to find gems and can have somepony dig it for her.
In other words, Rarity isn't using Spike for the gems. Heck she even pays him with gems for the dig he does. Exhibit A: S01E19: A Dog and Pony Show ....and why am I so critical about this post gah~ |

Yeah, everypony knows that. Spike and Rarity can't get gems without each other. But I think this is a meme where BM's facial expression is used where he's being a jerk to various characters. Just replace the first and third panel. |

Rarity managed to get plenty of gems all on her own before Spike and Twilight moved to Ponyville. She just uses him for menial physical labor (digging). Same difference I guess. |

We don't really know how she manages to get gemstones on her own. Even in Cutiemark Chronicles, it was RD's sonic rainboom that shattered the boulder Rarity homed in on.
Spike also manages to get rare ones on his own too without the use of a location spell like his Fire Ruby that Rarity seems unable to obtain by herself. |
