The story of John Henry is one of heroic futility. Even if he works faster than the machine, it costs him his life while the machine will work the next day.
Anyway, I wished they worked at some angle like this rather than a last-second "quality > quantity" thing. Although as it is that makes the Apple family look fairly bad. Only with the labor of five ponies who can't afford to be there ever day could they match the machine. |

@935025
But because of Henry the company didn't fire all the workers. Plus the Disney short is cool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGglKPqG16s |

It's also a bit about hard work.
Flim & Flam comes into town, scam apples outta the local farmers and sell the cider (75-25 split). The farmers did the growing and the machine does the brewing. Then they split when they wear out their welcome. I have a hard time believing they'd work the farm themselves at all, if they actually took it over. Most likely they'd sell it off in pieces. It's not just quality vs quantity. It's also hard work vs the get-rich scheme. |

There's no evidence that Flim and Flam didn't work for years perfecting their machine. Probably went into debt, too - thus, more reason for their desperation to acquire money as quickly as possible.
Also, yeah - John Henry thing was kinda obvious. |

@935099
Even if you work hard for years that doesn't justify the use of poor quality materials and rushed production. Now that I think about if they didn't push the machine at double they still could have win. |

^Maybe they could. In any case, the machine actually worked PERFECTLY - they ran it in an improper fashion only for the purpose of the contest.
Had they just - thrown those crap barrels away and used the earlier ones, there wouldn't have been any problem. We would have had a show with 2 new permanent characters and 4 impoverished Apples. |
