As you pointed out there have been plenty of similar characters in the past, and often times they end up being the most popular character in their respective shows (think GIR from Invader Zim). @Rainbow_Dude: I'm sorry that I appeared to be rather harsh towards your comment, which for the most part was fair and reasonable. It's just that the one line I quoted, taken together with the line I quoted from the original post, seems to represent a common attitude in this debate that I really don't like: "If you are offended by or upset with Derpys' name/voice/actions, your opinion doesn't matter."
I love Derpy, I enjoyed her scene in "The Last Roundup", and I don't think she was mentally challenged. Still, I can understand why someone would think otherwise, and I think we would be better off acknowledging that, explaining why we think she's not retarded, and agreeing to disagree. I spoke a bit further with one person who thought Derpy came off as a negative stereotype, and she mentioned that she was less upset with how Derpy was portrayed than with how hostile and insulting her defenders were. There are 3 points in particular that the complainers make that, I think, deserve a thoughtful response: (1) 'Derp' is sometimes used as a slur against the mentally challenged, and not just as a silly synonym of "oops" or "my bad"; one of the reasons I wanted Derpy to be called Derpy was to try to help the second definition uproot and marginalize the first definition. (2) Her voice, at least for her first couple of lines, does sound a lot like a stereotyped "retard" voice, due to the stilted, near-monotone delivery; however, her voice sounds much less "retarded" during her later two lines, and even many (or most) of her fans prefer that voice to her voice for her first two lines. (3) She doesn't do anything right at all in "The Last Roundup", and the way Dash treats her makes her seem marginalized; we know she's not a complete screw-up as she helped with Winter Wrap-Up and was in the Best Young Flier competition, and she's shown as an accepted part of the community in many other episodes, but judging from just "The Last Roundup" it's easy to get a negative impression of her. I know, I know, tl;dr, but there's already been so written about the issue here that I had to get that off my chest. |

While I am not unable to see why Derpy's portrayal could be (mis?)construed as an offensive stereotype, I AM scared to death that the complaints of the vocal minority could result in her removal from the show. It's quite possible that many of the vitriolic reactions in this thread could have the same origin. I agree the scene was somewhat overdone, but I look beyond that to see it as a win for the fandom. The creators know us. They love us. They gave us this gift. I'm afraid it may now be taken from us. If somepony that has brought so much of the community (and, if I may be permitted to be a bit selfish here, me personally) so much joy is taken away, it will, in my opinion, be a setback in fan relations. More importantly, it will make Derpy sad. Do you want a sad Derpy? DO YOU? :'( |

I worry more that the vitriolic, insulting responses to those complaints (which thankfully have been absent from this thread) might lead to the same result.
