The fact that she's even strong enough to put on a brave face for her subjects speaks volumes of her character.
Let's face it: Luna was effectively comatose while trapped on the moon. In effect, Celestia banished herself. She had absolutely no one she could really relate to. Philomena? Is a bird. Luna is the only being that can really relate to Celestia, and for all intents and purposes she pretty much killed her own sister. It's never said that Celestia knew whether or not Luna would ever return. A thousand years is a long time to be alone. And the worst part? Her subjects praised her for it, and proceeded to vilify her sister. Made her out to be a hero, when in reality Celestia probably wanted nothing more than to be feared for what she did, for someone, anyone, to tell her what she did was wrong, even if it wasn't. Just... Imagine your little brother, the only person in your life, decides to shoot up the neighborhood. For the sake of others, you kill him. Suddenly, everyone thinks you're a hero, not one person accuses you of killing your only family. While you're trying to grieve and cope with what you've done, everyone throws a fucking party in your name. |

Well, she's perfectly justified in showing her "trolly" side. When every day is the same and you're an immortal, you have to make your own fun somehow. And this is pretty much canon.
And I'm sure she "indulges" like any mortal pony does. Why shouldn't she? I doubt she's as extreme as Molestia, but let's not kid ourselves. Granted, it's probably just mindless fucking, because she can never hope to form a lasting romance with anyone. They all die. So, maybe she doesn't. Sex isn't the same as making love. |

I'm okay with everything but the tyrant portrayal. The whole point of her character is that she's a dictator, but she's sweet and benevolent, even motherly. |

I do like to think that Celestia is trying. Honestly trying to be as benevolent as possible. She may have had to do some things she wasn't proud of all in the spirit of keeping peace, hence Discord once calling her 'grim'.
But she's sacrificed a lot for her people. Her sister, for one thing. But she's managed to put on a smile and learned to be playful with her subjects. I almost think she is mentor to Twilight if only because she needs some connection with normal mortal ponies. The mane six help her in more ways than just one. |

I find myself wondering if she can stand it when ponys mentioned nightmare moon constantly and rarely her sister. I could well imagine her taking great pains to reduce NMM to a story just to not have to think about her during the day, or even legnthening the day just to get more time without the constant reminder of what she did. If Celestia had a journal, it would likely read like that of someone with survivors guilt. The fact that NMM's name is not used the way the devil's is, or as a threat to frighten children into good behavior, can likely be attributed to Celestial intervention. I could see Celestia taking a vacation from rule, purely to set aside the burden she has carried for a thousand years, one that for all we know she really did not want to take up. (Given the behavior of modern nobility, she might have been forced to take it up to prevent a breakdown of order.) |

Regretlestia is probably the only, interpretation that goes with any interpretations of what the sisters are. It also makes the most sense... Especially if there was the whole outside influence thing. Then it's not just you had to shoot your brother because he shot up the neighborhood, it has the added bonus of because somebody decided it would be fun to slip PCP in his drink. |

When I look at celestia I see this:
She has lived VERY long maybe she is immortal or maybe she is just very long lived.... clearly in her life she has seen great horrers and dealt with saddness that we as short lived as we are could never comprehend She has watched everyone she ever cared for (exept her sister) wither away or clamed before their time. She cannot find love.... anyone she feels for will be long gone before she knows it. Prehaps she has tried to find love and start a family before, but imagine a life were you witness your lover and your children and your children's children die.... You can rise the sun and change the cosmos and be worshipped for it, but eventually you'll crave to just be accepted.... Discord is no friend to her.... only a demon who presists throught time to torment her and remind her of the mortallity of those who are around her.... Under all those layers of torment and suffering there is a mare who has a kind heart a cheery humor and motherly love..... This is the truth of Celestia |
