Does the rest of the world think Americans are weird for having a food taboo about horse meat? We see horses as pets and companions, so we look at eating them the same way we look at eating cats and dogs. Maybe in a desperate situation you'd resort to it, but otherwise it seems wrong to us somehow. However, I understand that in Europe no such taboo exists, and horse meat is quite popular. My best guess is that in Europe, horses considered livestock more than they are companion animals, but perhaps one of our European friends can enlighten me.

@bboifatz Well I'm an American and I don't think I'd have a problem with eating horse meat... I really don't think it's any different from eating cows or chickens or whatever as those can also be pets and I guess companions. For me, a bigger problem is how the animals are raised and butchered and if it's done in a humane fashion or not.

In a survival situation pretty much the only thing I know of where people will actually let themselves starve to death rather than eat it is with cannibalism, because there are quite a few people in the world who would rather die than eat another person (even though there are also a lot who would rather live). Anything from maggots to chimpanzees is on the table if you're at risk of starvation, however that doesn't mean the thought of eating an animal that's considered "special" isn't squicky to a lot of people.

That looks really stringy. Yuck.

@239 Very true. Humans can eat just about anything (animal wise, that is, obviously we can't eat frozen nitrogen or something like that) if you cook and chew it long enough.

289: I don't know how Europe does it, if it's on a small-scale basis. It still bothers me a lot and I'd rather it not happen, since I work with Horses, I see how readily they bond with us and I Love them like Family. So I object to it on those grounds but there are some other problems with it in America. Slaughter Plants have bad track records, unlike blood from other live-stock, Horse Blood is toxic because of the medications that are commonly given to Horses, so is their meat as a result: Yet people will still eat McDonalds food, so that's kind of a moot point I guess. Because of this the Blood cannot be reused and ends up being dumped into the local water supply.

Furthermore, the vast majority of Americans are indeed against the re-introduction of this practice. So any community that allows a plant practicing Horse slaughter near them will has had to deal with the stigma of that as well: It's also been statistically proven that Communities with Slaughter Plants will have elevated rates of crime. Which is Obvious really, how many of you who eat meat have actually killed the animal yourselves? Don't you think that doing it as a career would erode your Natural Empathy and cause you to give less of a Shit about life in general? Another problem is that Humane Slaughter under these conditions is impossible because Horses are too smart and skittish to make the job easy. They suffer horribly during the process, Bolt-stunners rarely hit their mark because of a Horses tendency to shy and the results are horrifying. Since it's an assembly-line production, a lot goes wrong. Animals in transit are not properly loaded into trailers and suffer horrific injuries as a result, ending up with broken legs and getting trampled by other Horses. There was a recent incident when one of these trailers overturned and Blood spilled everywhere. Obviously not from the accident itself.

This is just scratching the surface, the BLM itself has been conducting round-ups of Wild-Horses, claiming that it's necessary because there isn't enough room and that they are starving themselves out. I saw these supposedly Starving Wild-Horses for myself a while back while I was visiting Nevada and that's Bullshit. The real reason they want them off the land is to make room for more Beef Cattle. In their round-ups, Horses of every age are run by Helicopter into pens to the point where they've died from literally running their own hooves off and pregnant mares will abort their foals. This bothers me on a deep and visceral level; It's a good thing that I'm not still out in Nevada and that I don't have the means to get back out there anytime soon, because I'd be heading out there with a Gillie suit and a Scoped Mosin-Nagant. I have no doubts about the kind of People behind this: First they came for the Indians, now they come for the Horses . . .

I'm a Vegetarian and proud of that choice and while I would not force that choice on others: Factory Farming and Slaughter is a horribly destructive, waste-full and back-wards practice. The amount of resources it takes to process a single pound of beef is ludicrous and if it continues this way, it will ruin us. If you want to eat meat, fine but bring it back to small-scale farming because you dumbasses are going to Fuck up everything over a Culturally-conditioned luxury item.

I would argue that Horses should be treated differently from Cattle and Animals commonly considered designated for Human consumption by their Nature. They have a capacity to form a unique bond with us that nurtures us both on multiple levels. You have to spend time with them to fully understand it but in working with you, they will cause you to be aware of every aspect of yourself and it leads to a self-awareness that refines you as a person. Not to mention that they were instrumental in the founding of our civilization. Far more than any other Animal. For those gifts that they share with us, they deserve better than being tormented and slaughtered by the Worst of us.

@945 (I'm the Anon you were responding to above) Yeah see that's seriously fucked up, I don't think there's inherently anything wrong with eating animals but modern factory farming is definitely a disgusting practice and people should be able to think of something better at this point... back to small scale farms as you said. This is also why I don't have a problem with hunting as long as it's done responsibly and the animal is eaten, as at least it's able to live a free, natural life before it's killed. I know a lot of people seem to think it's just a bunch of animal rights enthusiasts who are against the practice but as you say more people should be aware of the health and sustainability concerns of factory farming as well.

And my family used to keep horses so I can understand where you're coming from... that's the same reason I could never eat a dog (unless I was starving I'm sure) even though I don't look down on cultures that do on principle alone.

295: Thank you for that, it means a lot to see People who can think for themselves and realize that there is a problem. It's ingratiating to see how easily people fall into the conditioned response of just dismissing anything in anyway critical of eating meat. You know, the whole: "Hurr-Durr! I eat Meat because it's tasteh, Silleh hippeh." As if that's an adequate response . . .

I'd rather starve than eat a pet. Just saying. It's alright for people to have these feelings.

Even for cattle and chicken, there's issues with humane treatment as is. I shudder to think how people would treat horses and other animals for slaughter. That is why so many people have issues with it. Because so much of the slaughtering is NOT very ethically done.

I just don't understand the hypocrisy of treating horses as special. If people had any actual farm experience they would know sheep and goats and even pigs are just as intelligent. But they are small and stinky and you can not ride them so it's all ok to slaughter them...

I guess it's just Survival of Cutest.

^A fair point, being a Vegetarian, I've made the choice not to eat any Animal but I can't realistically expect that everyone would embrace a Vegetarian Diet. As such, It's Human Nature to try and get exceptions made for what you care about most. However, that's why I also argue against Factory Slaughter, getting People to critically examine the practices inherent in that industry would be of great benefit not only to Animals but to Us as well. Feed-Lot conditions being what they are, It's really remarkable that we haven't had a major outbreak of Bovine Encephalitis in America. It simply cannot be healthy to eat Meat from any Animal raised and processed in such a manner.
