I tried reading it, actually.
It's a garbled mess, mostly, and the story just got convulted into a yarn that a tiger played with after a while, but the visuals are fun, and there is some funny stuff, there.
Mind you, this is a personal opinion, so, best way to learn what you think of Homestuck, is to give it a read yourself.

homestuck is a webcomic made by andrew hussie
it is generally agreed upon that it is the most confusing piece of gargbage this side of paradox space
basically
four friends get together to play a game that will destroy the earth due to meteors and stuff
there are game constructs known as prospit and derse, white and black chess pieces respectively
in order to kill the black king the kids have to create these sort of spritey things by combining a random object, a dead something and a magicky sparkle thing that pops out of another game construct
this acts as their guide, and they get into the medium where prospit and derse are located by breaking something before the meteors obliterate them
the goal of the game is to spawn a new universe but this session is sort of broken due to a colossal series of cockups on the kids' part and of their predecessors, the trolls
in short they prototype an omnipotent dogthing that kills everyone ever
after realizing that the cock has been upped to astronomical levels they start a process called a scratch that is basically starting a new game
this is really the simplest an explanation you can get because you seriously need a goddamn flowchart in order to understand what the devilfucking dickens is going on

I'd assumed that for the longest time. Pretty much everything about this fandom makes me think it's some form of mass hallucination.

Homestuck is ehhh. If you know how to go with the flow and stuff, it can be a fun ride, but most sane people will be going "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON." The music is kind of nice though, as are the visuals. The only thing that's flawed is the story, which is basically "4 kids play a game, it takes over their life, *INSERT FOUR THOUSAND PAGES OF POINTLESS DICKERY HERE* 12 trolls get introduced, lotsa murder happens, more confusing shit happens"

Whoah, you guys are a vitriolic bunch when it comes to Homestuck.

I enjoy it, the story isn't half as convoluted as people say, it's just long for the sake of emersion. If you're the kind of person who loves getting caught up in the backstory of a world, the universe in which it happens, and all the neat little bells and whistles, it's heaven.

If you're like me and just want the raw deal, skim the pesterlogs and catch up on the recaps. Appreciate the subtleties when you have the time.

It's a hell of a story with a splendid narration and attention to detail beyond reason, you just have to know how to tackle it.

That comic is pretty much one webcommunity meets another webcommunity. Nevertheless I love both Homestuck and ponies.

I personally liked Homestuck. It's a little too complicated, but there's a decent story.
I however suggest you Problem Sleuth, since Homestuck is really too complicated sometimes.
And if you add Doctor Scratch and the author's own ingerence in the story, I often wonder if Hussie knows what he's talking about.

The strength of Homestuck is in its characterization, which Problem Sleuth just plain does not have. When Third Fake Detective does something "epic" like remake a whole universe, it is impossible to care, because it's just ciphers doing random bullshit which escalates to try to keep your attention. But when the kids in Homestuck do it, it's amazing, because you're thinking about what it means to them and how it affects their lives.

Plus there is so much foreshadowing and cross-time communication that whenever the payoff comes you just have to wonder how the hell he makes it work.

The fandom overlap with MLP is obvious because they're a bunch of friends with distinct personalities and quirks who happen to be color-coded and are marked with symbols of themselves.
