I like MLP:FiM, don’t misunderstand me. I just like it because it’s a cartoon. As a cartoon connoisseur of sorts, I sample animation from all over the world and of course with MLP’s internet fame, I needed to check it out. It’s cute and it has a good message, but it’s not spectacular. It’s severely lacking in some elements (such as color theory and composition), and excels in others (like characterization and motion). I don’t see why people seem to think it’s the best thing in the world: it’s a good kid’s show, but it wasn’t exactly made to appeal to an older crowd: there is absolutely no intellectual stimulation or deep thought involved in it, like most people need in a franchise. People like it because other people on the internet told them to like it, and then they found something else in it that they liked: perhaps the fandom, the characters, the morals, and I’ve even heard of people using ponies to get themselves out of a depression, which is great! But it’s a children’s show and there is no way to get around that. There’s nothing wrong with liking a children’s show—I just wish people would stop acting like it’s the greatest franchise ever, because it isn’t. From both an artistic and intellectual standpoint, it’s not something to be regarded as excellent |

As a writer, I say you're overthinking everything. |

Welp...everyone has different opinions, can't do much with that. |

It's just a fun show... nothing else beyond that. And that's really all that's needed. |
| DeeperMadness #910310 5 months ago |
Part of it is down to just how much comes from the community and the way in which the people who work on the show have responded.
But why did you come here, a fan-centric image board, just to bring up the point? Wouldn't a general cartoon forum work better? |

How do you post gif. images? I just keep getting just the words. |
| Psychopomf #910315 5 months ago |
I really don't think it'd be as popular as it is without the animators
and the voice actors and the writers LOVING their unexpected fanbase |

You either get it, or you don't. |

@#910311:
You do it like this: Make sure the http:// is at the start and the file extension (.jpg, .gif, .png etc.) is at the end. Don't forget to keep the [img] as lower case. Good luck! |

If you were to ask me which part of the show I liked most as to why I like it so much, I wouldn't even be able to give you a clue as to why I like it. I don't even know why I like it so much. It's just everything put together the way it is makes it a brilliant thing.
Then again, it's all a matter of perspective and opinion, so meh. |

People like it for a number of reasons: it's a kids' show that isn't completely moronic (a rarity these days) in either its simplicity or in trying to be "random"; there's a connection between the fans and the creators that (I assume) is also rare, and it's encouraging to see successful people who aren't oblivious to their fans or to the internet.
The episodes' plots tend to be original, or else they put twists on the ones we're familiar with. They might "jump the shark" eventually, but it hasn't happened yet. The characters have depth, they're not completely archetypal, which is, again, a rarity for a kids' show. The creators are actually thinking about what they're doing--they like their jobs. They're having fun, and they like their fans. That and the fandom give the show the vast majority of its appeal, I think. |

@OP - MLP isn't going to compete with say...Pixar or Studio Ghibli in terms of animation(or whatever your bar is). However, for a show that was aimed at little children, the amount of small touches in animation, compared to most dribble on TV, is quite refreshing for us.
Just look at this scene from MLP:
Heck, any location from Equestria would do. There is so much personality and detail, something many of us weren't expecting from a 22-minute toy advertisement. |

I actually kind of agree with you. It's probably not the most remarkable cartoon ever.
But it is enjoyable nevertheless. |
| LucasGAN #910966 5 months ago |
Why dont you use your "awesome" animator skillz and remake one episode? |
| TheLoneLampman #911460 5 months ago |
I had a big response typed up, but whatever. TL;DR so I scrapped it.
OP is either troll or someone who doesn't understand that there is more to a cartoon than just visuals. There is charm. The magic, if you will. It may not be perfect by your standards, but it's perfect for what it is. |

Hey, opinions are cool. I loudly applaud anyone who doesn't really like the show as much as the rest of us that doesn't attack the show's periphery demographic. Kudos. |

I love this... I fuck'n LOVE educated 'artists' like yourself who think their opinions have more credibility by regurgitating nonsense your textbooks and professors spouted.
So you've chosen to enter a career field whose target audience is, what? 90? 95 percent children yet you're criticizing a show for being what it is? That's rich... "Hey Cow! I don't like you because you're a Cow!" Brilliant! BTW, Color Theory and Composition are bullshit... the key word in Color Theory is "Theory" and Composition is an attempt to shoe-horn in mathematics into aesthetics... square pegs and round holes. Art of ANY kind I'd say is 90 percent subjective and perhaps 10 percent analytical so fuck your demographics and target audiences. You want entertainment targeted for adults? You want 99 percent of pure fucking SHIT? I daresay children's entertainment is many ways can be far more superior because it remains true to it's core. Basic storytelling, straight-forward characters, imaginative locales and more than anything else... a sense of morality. Usually when you begin to target your more 'mature' audience and stray too far from this core, over-thinking 'oh I'm so clever' folks like yourself confuse 'gimmicks' with 'creativity' and the result tends to be a mess (there are exceptions... 'Twilight' comes to mind) So in summation, if you don't care for it that's absolutely fine but don't fuck'n waltz in here trying to convince others that their tastes in entertainment are flawed... you've got alot to learn buddy. Pretty soon you'll be out of school working for an animation studio and you can take all of your education and blow it out of your ass because if the client you're working for wants a pretty purple pony then you're making pretty purple ponies... end of story. |

I actually do also want to point out that it's nice to see a cartoon that uses Flash as an actual animation tool rather than just abusing tweens or coming across as very cheap like Flash cartoons tend to do.
The only other Flash cartoon I can think of off the top of my head that animates well is Wakfu. |

I like it because I like it. I need no reasons for doing so. |

Why is it that when someone expresses an unpopular opinion and they get responded with immaturity and flaming?
Really, guys? |
