Over time,the word "Derp" has over time changed to signify when someone admits they've done or said something stupid (something I suggest you start doing if you want to save what little dignity you have.). When Derpy was officially named, she was named because somebody on the animation team either screwed up or intentionally drew her eyes that way. Over time, she's become codified as a ditzy, clumsy, yet extremely kind and loveable pony, and SStudio B has captured her essence perfectly.
