People keep forgetting that she was portrayed pretty much exactly as how the majority of the fandom saw her: Dopey, clumsy and loveable.

Like I said earlier, some people are just too dumb to live. Have mercy on the less intelligent denizens of the Tubes.

She was incredibly cute, not to mention, if someone is ambassador from bronies to the staff, that's Derpy, people just cry because it's fanon is now on air and no longer "trendy" as they think.

I, for one, am more endeared to the novelty of Derpy's journey from mere background pony with a wall-eyed look to having actual speaking parts with a main character and an acknowledged name that came from fans, more or less.

Her character portrayal is just a bonus.

Guys, our little Derpy is all grown up. Now, for our next child: FOOTBALL!

...No, seriously. We've seen plenty of football references throughout the series so far. Let's see if we can actually get them to play it! If we can do that, who knows what could be next?

Eh, considering that Derpy's Portrayal in some of the fanfics involves her being completely incapable of coherent speech, her current portrayal is a step above that.

She is barely functional as an individual. I watched it again a few times to be sure. But you guys are deluding yourself if you think she is anything other than mentally challenged. Right down to the slurred speech and inability to notice the repercussions of her own actions.

I don't think that making a retarded pony was very sensitive. It would have been just as efficient and a lot more "daww" inspiring if they had used more of the positive Derpy fancannon. Such as the "derpy is best mommy," "derpy is really smart despite being wall-eyed," or "derpy the mailmare" fics.

We would know just as surely that the creators had been paying attention to us. And it wouldn't have created anywhere near the controversy.

^and i think you tits are being assholes for assuming a random mare, that you saw for under a minute, is mentally challenged simply because she made a few mistakes within close proximity to each other and has a voice that MIGHT have sounded kinda challenged, ya know, if you were being a stereotyping prick.
i mean, honestly, you are just being picky and rude for bitching about such an amazing event. the show actually shows that they're paying attention, to US non the less, and you turn around and say, "fuk u guise" simply because it didn't turn out exactly like your personal favorite fanon version.
you make me sick, you selfish, bigoted cunt.

Oh no, it was clear, though unnecessary really. The only way this will stop is if we just ignore them. The trolls will give up, seeing it as having no real affect on us, and anyone who actually was offended by it will eventually break off being fed up with the rest of the fandom, and thus finally leave us alone

You can say that, but at the end of the day, someone still gets shafted.

It may or may not be "sensitive" (that just sounds like a moral high ground to rush to), but as a previous post pointed out, no one seriously raises a stink over characters who are more explicitly stupid - such as Ed from Ed, Edd n' Eddy, or Peter Griffin from Family Guy. And Derpy wasn't even that. Not to mention, this wasn't even an issue until her appearance in the episode. Maybe it was just because alternate interpretations were more viable then, but how many said "You shouldn't make her stupid, gais :("? At best, I can only recall that people "prefer" a more 'positive' portrayal, and, as per usual with people, it's not such a huge deal until it suddenly is (which in this case was the episode airing).

The common interpretation of her as a clutzy, clumsy pony prevailed. If anyone's to blame for any negative portrayal, it's ultimately us, at least in part. And, as it seems, most of us like this interpretation. Because it's funny, because it entertains us, because it's how we saw her and now how the creative team portrayed her.

But mostly, because she's ours. It's the most blatant shout-out to the large periphery demographic the show has. She's not at all a mean-spirited statement on the team's behalf, she's their gift to us.
dudemang

Also, we've likely not seen the last of her. More appearances will probably balance out any negative stigma.

The thing @dudemang is that what you expect from shows like that is different than what people except from My Little Pony. I think you guys should be more understanding towards people who feel that this sort of characterization does not work out so well for this kind of show. Me, I hate Family Guy or Simpsons or Spongebob or other shows which depend on me being expected to identify with the hick on screen with passion, and despite the fact that I don't take that one-minute Derpy sequence so seriosuly, I did have that five seconds between seeing it and loving it where I wondered if this really was the smartest move the makers did. The thing with those other comedy characters is that you know they are basically anti heroes that demonstrate what you -shouldn't- be like...But ponies are also role models, expected to teach about friendship and how to behave with others, so there are different overtones to consider, especially when you think that some of the viewers are parents who keep an eye on what all this teaches their child, or people who aren't teens with not so much love for this type of more aggressive or exaggerated comedy. People who may have been aware of fan phenomena but not neccessarily like what bronies do who comforted themselves with the thought that it will never affect the show which will keep itself a better standard.

Now, I'm enjoying the show, but I'm just saying that there can be a perfect rationale for those who do not like this turn of events. You should all still be good fans and express your love of their attention to the creators, but when I see a comment like #905239's I nod and thin, there's some truth to that standpoint too.

>We would know just as surely that the creators had been paying attention to us

They CAN'T pay close attention to us because they are prohibited to do so by contract (they are not allowed to view fanwork in order to avoid future copyright issues).

Also retards don't have the intelectual prerequisite to feel offended, and if all this racket is about retards' parents feeling offended then they should just suck it up and avoid doing drugs during pregnancy, or wear a condom during incest next time.

I see that viewpoint, Vree, but I can't bring myself to agree when Derpy isn't a particular circumstance when it comes to her characterization. She IS a particular circumstance when it comes to her relation with the fans, and I think that's where the weight lies.

@Vree "But ponies are also role models, expected to teach about friendship and how to behave with others".
So wouldn't it be wise to help children with dealing with others who aren't as quick or sharp as themselves? Isn't that part of being a mature individual?

Look. As much as I love the show and fandom I didn't felt happiness when I saw Derpy scenes. I was sad. Let me please explain:

Now we all thought somewhere deep inside that she is just a normal pony with a little wicked stare and clumsy hooves (and who can blame her) which would completely fit in the way she was created.
I understand that the animators tried to show us that they care but making her sound and act like she did... boxed her, framed her like a stereotypical dumbass aded to the show for the lulz, thus killing her potential future character development. And another message that they have send though this was: The show is exactly how it looks.

If you're going to argue "for Gods sake its a kids show" I want to remind you something. This used to be more than just a kid show. Thats why we started watching it in the first place right? Because of the ability to entertain with childish yet sophisticated humor. Now its disappearing from the show and so is the subtlety of the jokes it self. Thats what I used to love in this thing, the glimpses of sarcasm, famous people appearing as background ponies, even potential mature references. it was all balanced, pure, the characters were behaving naturally, logically, there were no forced jokes. That was the beauty of it.
As I watched the season 2 episodes I began to realize more and more: They make me laugh but they dont make me smile anymore... the magic is gone, something is missing. Its the purity of the show if you understand what I mean. The characters are beginning to fall into stereotypical cartoon behavior, the plot (not that plot!) is weaker, there are more holes in it... The show is loosing overall quality. I think I'll write a letter about this to the producers, and try to contact Lauren Faust her self... not that it will probably do any good. But at least I can say I tried.

Takashi_0 Is my post immature enough BTW?

^ I think what you're feeling is just typical nostalgia for what you felt when something was new and fresh. And you know Lauren's not even working with the show anymore right?

I think you should realize how hard people are working on this show, and appreciate their hard work, not get wrapped up in your own nostalgia.
