Making an image of him in a tuxedo, actually, but I figured I'd upload this bit since I got it done.

Why does everyone keep assuming that Spike would have wings?

I mean, it WOULD be awesome if he did, but we never, ever saw so much as a hint of them. We have every reason to believe that he is a land dragon.

Neat adaption though. It kind of fits, without making him look distorted like in some of his incidents.

He's got wings because I like the idea of him growing wings as a sign of age.

I believe he didn't get them before because he was artificially grown, not aged.

I like how it's impossible to just grow important appendages like that. It'd be like saying all foals are earth ponies, but they grow wings and horns with puberty. It just doesn't work.
Not to mention we've already seen him as an adult in Secret of My Excess... And don't say "no no hes like a digimon he has alternate evolutions with greed or not" because that's not how dragons work. Twilight made Spike a giant baby in Cutiemark Chronicles, and then he speed grew (greed only speeds growth as stated by Zecora, it doesn't change his genetics to where he won't grow wings, as if he would) thanks to greed. That's all there is to say on the matter.

Why does everyone also forget about when twilight aged him too much when he was born. He didn't have wings then either, and that was age growth.

@902039

Actually, it would imply that greed is how dragons naturally grow, not artificially. Living with ponies has prevented Spike from practicing his natural instincts to become the dragon that he's supposed to be.

Still, there's no reason why the artist shouldn't interpret Spike this way.

You all seem to be forgetting that dragons don't fucking EXIST, and trying to apply logic to them is pointless!

Larva grow wings later
Caterpillers grow wings later
For the amount of dragon biology we know in MLP Spike could sport airplane engines at random.
Point is, we don't know jack shit.
"But he grew into a dragon without wings"
Sorry but as much as we'd like to believe that is the only way of growing, with the amount of information we have, it doesn't mean anything apart from it being something that "could" happen.

^Name calling? For shame, Anonymous, for shame... I'm afraid the information presented by Zecora does insist Spike is a wingless dragon until stated otherwise. Sorry I pissed you off.

No, no, no, listen, the argument I used was right. infront of your eyes. You missed the entire point of it.
It's not about Spike being a bug.
Indeed Zecora gave an explanation to Spike's growth.
She said "A dragon is prone to greed" and that it would "make growth speed".
The key words being. prone and speed.
Prone means that they can easily sway towards greed, but, it is not neccesary.
The word speed means that it simply accelerated growth, as in, dragons grow faster than they would without a hoard.
We have no idea as to how Spike would look with natural growth.

That bug thing was a joke. Laugh.
Anyway: No, it's you who doesn't understand. Last time I'm going to say this, pay attention. You are correct about what Zecora said, dragons are prone to greed, which makes him grow faster. Here's where you got confused. Him being prone to greed is a natural instinct, meaning it's his normal, natural nature. When she sais greed speeds growth, it means greed speeds growth. She didn't say it changes his dna. She didn't say it alternates his growth in a speedy way. She said irs sped up like normal dragons, the end. I'm sorry, but you're trying to use points that aren't their.

Natural instinct, yes.
Thus meaning it's the only way? no
Normal nature, yes.
Same as above.
Accelerated speed is never healthy for any organism.
"She didn't say it alternates his growth in a speedy way" actually she did.
"She said it sped up like normal dragons"
Sped up like normal dragons? It would be sped up, because then there would be no point in saying that it was sped up.
If it was the natural growth cycle of a drago-

In hindsight I could have phrased that better, what I meant is it's common mythology for dragons to age very quickly compared to other creatures, and live a long time compared to other creatures. MLP added a twist involving greed, so now we know Spike ages slower than what is instinctively natural, yet presumably into the same form until canon says otherwise. To reiterate, unless anything states dragons in the MLP universe have "alternate evolutions" than they don't. Will lime green toothless aligators grow wing with puberty? Will emotional tortoises or unicorn foals? Of course not, don't be ridiculous.

At the same time there's nothing which states that they couldn't have alternate evolution.
And just because there's "common" mythology as to how dragons grow we do not know if this is the case in MLP.
There are some animals which indeed have great morphological changes happening to them depending on certain factors. Such as many reef fish which are even capable of changing gender depeding on the situation they find themselves in.

So, either we accept facts we don't have, or we accept that there's possibilities beyond the facts 'till research states otherwise.

I'm only using the facts given by the show, it's creators, and common mythology (you say it like mythological creatures don't have a norm, a premise, or guidelines, but they do... they can be broken by creative liberties that are taken in-universe, of course) to form logical hypotheses. I'm tired and we're getting nowhere, let us agree to to disagree and call it a night, shall we?

All the best art and fics of older!Spike since the dawn of the fandom depicts him with wings. Thus, I prefer him with wings. Thus a LOT of other bronies prefer him with wings, and will keep portraying him with them. It's only natural. There's no sense in fighting the way of the beast.
