The name Ditzy Doo came before before Derpy's rise from the background pony lot. It referenced an offscreen pony who was out of town being silly (flying north to get the southern birds). Officially, Ditzy didn't have a body to call her own, though a purple haired Derpy clone appeared later with the birds. I still wonder why people jumped to the animation error who had been normal since (and DIDN'T leave town at that moment) being Ditzy and not the pony who brought the birds back.
I'm ok with the nickname explanation, but I don't see the relation between Derpy and Ditzy that one would be a nickname for the other. AJ to Applejack and Pinkie to Pinkamena make sense, but Derpy to Ditzy/Ditzy to Derpy? |

Ditzy;
Ditzy means basically acting really dumb and innocent. Not really knowing what is going on. Many people say it to like 'ditzy blonde' cuz blondes are ditzy. Silly and Scatterbrained. Slightly out of it, and don't know what is going on. Derpy; Awkward or embarrassing, especially pertaining to a person. To be inefficient, slow, unable, inexperienced, not working correctly, stupid, naive, etc. A word that usually takes the place of "retarded." Not "all there in the head"; possibly lacking intelligence or common sense. The wall-eyed background character in "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic", Derpy Hooves, is named after this. |

My headcannon had Ditzy Doo as her real name, while keeping Derpy as an affectionate fan nickname.
But if the creators of the show have decided to make Derpy official, I'm ok with this. Ditzy Doo is dead, long live Derpy. |

Ditzy is an established word with a definition meaning being stupid more or less. Derp is an unestablished word that still has a variety of meanings. A random exclamation in sentences, reference to the wall-eyed look, being ditzy, etc. |

The speculation of Ditzy Doo being the official name of Derpy Hooves comes from a comment by one of the people working on the show; if I remember correctly, it was in fact Lauren Faust. It was said that if Derpy was made a significant character, the name Ditzy Doo might be applied to her. This was way back during the first season.
For whatever reason, they appear to have just used "Derpy". I find that odd, because I doubt "derpy" will survive the rigors of time and become an established, concretely defined word, as opposed to "ditzy", which already is. Then again, Homer Simpson's "d'oh" was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2001. So who can say. |

Ditzy Doo is the pony who went the wrong direction to get the birds, and was never shown.
Derpy Hooves is unrelated to her, but some people kept calling Ditzy because Ditzy is somewhat similar in meaning and Derpy had not been stated in canon yet. Combine this with a few idiots who think Derpy is insulting yet Ditzy is not, and you hav a group that latches onto Ditzy being better than Derpy so much that canon that gave them Ditzy can't even get them all to drop it. Then you've got your "Ditzy is 'established', Derpy is not." These people don't deserve your time, for they refuse to accept that language is created and changed by those that speak it, and instead defer to organizations which even themselves admit they only report on, and do not mandate, language. |
