Yamino, at her tumblr, links to a blog where a disabled person talks about how hurt she was with Derpy's appearance. It was an interesting perspective. Ignoring whether Derpy is supposed to mentally retarded or not, the fact that many people are offended by her characterization shows, to me, a misfire by the creative staff of MLP:FIM. I think an apology, followed by assurance that Derpy isn't a retarded stereotype (or a guarantee that she won't be depicted as such in the future) would be a great start at patching things over. It's good when people like Yamino share different perspectives - it helps us all learn to sympathize with each other, and exposes us to ideas we may have never considered before. However, the part where Yamino says, "I have lost all respect for the creators after this" is utter sanctimonious horseshit. Some people she doesn't know make a mistake in one episode, and she loses all respect for them? They fail to live up to her standards, and she's "absolutely disgusted"? HORSE. SHIT. This is a terribly self-centered and unforgiving viewpoint, and speaks ill of her maturity level. |

I'm glad that people like Yamino are out there in the fandom. This, to me, illustrates the main difference between male-dominated fandoms and female-dominated fandoms. Namely, that girls tend to be less asshole-ish and care a lot more about social justice. My Little Pony was beloved by (mostly) female fans for over two decades and never came up with a fan nickname that could be controversial.
You can disagree that Derpy Hooves was not meant to be a negative portrayal, but you do NOT get to say that WE should get over it for thinking that the whole concept of Derpy is offensive. |

It would be nice if Yamino was only saying it in a way as an opinion but she's not... She's trying to label her claims as fact like "Derp is a slur!" when it's not. She's got a fanbase who has no clue what MLP or Derpy is. So it's just her convincing a majority of people who will believe her who have no clue what the other side is like. It's like raising a child to believe something is wrong... They don't know any better so they personally grow the same hate. But the worst part is she feeds misinformation as facts when again it's just her opinion but that's the main issue is she goes so far that she actually does cause a huge mess even if she's just one person. She claims herself to be an Amplifier?
