not everyone's going to be a genus, and not everyone has some learning disability. Personally, as someone who apparently has a learning disability, I kind of like the idea that Derpy has one too. It's nice seeing that she can sort of able to function in society, have friends, and possibly have a family, that she can have a good life. She's funny, and some of the stories i've seen about her are inspiring. Maybe that's just me though. |

Anon 4484: it varies. It's very easy for people to take the line "I just don't know what went wrong" as ether she's too slow to figure out what happened/how she caused it, or that what happened made absolutely no sense to the laws of physics. I hope that makes sense. |

Sweetie Belle takes long to understand things, destroys her sister's workplace while trying to help = She's a bit clumsy and "slow on the uptake" (I've seen this phrase all over the place).
Snails speaks slowly, makes non-sequiturs and messes things up at the talent show = Lot's of characters are like that. It's funny. Derpy is called Derpy, has a low voice, is distracted and causes accidents = OMG ARE THEY MAKING HER RETARDED, THAT IS SO OFFENSIVE |

To HeinousActZX: I posted it in "Scraps", the folder on DA for stuff not intended as "art"- unfinished works, rough images, and so on. It's not in my main gallery, and if someone took it for an attempt at "art", I'd be floored. Stuff in Scraps doesn't show unless you are specifically looking in Scraps or have chosen to watch a Deviant's Scraps.
To most everypony else: The point of all of this was to poke fun at how ridiculous the anti-ableism and neurotypical folks online are both being about Derpy's behavior, not to claim that either of these two is supposed to have a disability. My position? Snails is "slow", yes. In a funny, quirky, cartoonish way. He's obviously not meant to be a reference to LDs, or they'd toss in something more blatant, IMO. By the same token, Derpy is just "derpy" the same way Disney's Goofy is "goofy" and Daffy Duck is "daffy" (yeah, it actually means something). She makes mistakes, things happen around in and it turns out wrong. Honestly, I didn't think Derpy came off as stupid, slow, "retarded" (by Celestia's unshorn fetlocks, do I ever hate that word) or disabled. Accident-prone, yes. Believably confused about what happened? Sure! We've seen ponies bounce on clouds before without producing lightning, and how many ponies bust through the floor just by sitting on it? More likely, calamity follows her like a lost puppy, and she gets the blame. |

I like seeing them as both mildly slow...makes them unique. For Derpy especially they don't shun her or label her or anything of that sort. She is seen just like any other pony in the show. So I like the fact a cartoon having special characters just as long as they arnt singled out,treated bad,or over the top. Also its just a kids cartoon of course they arnt gonna be diagnosed with a disorder! but us fans can us our imaginations and see derpy any way we want to:) |
