As I recall, some time ago it was a popular gag to have Derpy go out into the Everfree and come across cryptozoology and strange, urban-legendy creatures. The Flatwoods Monster just sort of became Derpy's BFF among them.
As to an actual STORY behind why Derpy and the Flatwood Monster are BFFs, I don't think one was ever settled on. |
