My head canon is that humans left earth long ago, leaving behind information for the sapient species they thought would arise in thier absence.

Wait. So we know the human version of one of Pinkie Pie's ancestors?

Quick, someone track the lineage! We must find the modern-day human version of Pinkie Pie!

I looked for a Johann Strauss II pony. None have mutton chops as glorious as his.

Where does the magic come from in theories 2 and 3? Why don't we have magic?

@999 (lol awesome comment number)

"Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" said the guy who said that. They are just genetically altered or some crap and that's why they have it.

We don't believe in magic. The extreme majority of humanity does't believe in magic, and, belief being as strong as it is, it is enough to cancel out any possible excess mana the world could possibly supply.
Equestria, thankfully, has yet to come to that.

Theory, it's a fantasy universe.

Any humans that existed would have been fantasy universe humans.

They serve the same role as Cthulu.

But magic DOES exist. Do you have friends? Friendship is magic.

Most humans are bastards and that cancels out the whole magic from harmony thing. Once we are gone ponies will be free to magic all day everday.

Or perhaps Equestria is a virtual reality? The ponies are AI agents, oblivious to the truth. Celestia and Luna are avatars of real humans. Luna had to take a break, so Celestia "sent" her to the moon for "1000 years". Discord could be another human (good friend of "Celestia" and "Luna" IRL), or simply a rogue AI agent who learned the truth and decided to exploit it. Celestia and Luna are doing it "for the lulz", or they were doing it, until they started to love the "ponies" and now don't want to end the simulation.

OK, quite bad & sad "theory" actually. Sorry. I'm tired, my brains are messed up from the lack of sleep. I will go to bed now and try to sleep.

Great work finding composer doppelgänger for ponies.

Number 3 would make an awesome James Cameron movie. We know from Avatar that he could be able to produce realistic sentient equines that are not from the bottom of the Uncanny Valley.

I *do* think that Equestria probably had some very good composers. It could be that what we hear as "Ride of the Valkyries" is a similar local tune that has matching connotations to ponies, much as it's unlikely they would speak English (or in constant rhyme).

If you really want to explain elements of human culture, like saddles, I would suggest that they have the ability to view our Earth remotely from time to time, possibly only when there is a sufficiently skilled unicorn around, or hearing from the Princesses. Over time there grows this vague body of associations and lore which is half-remembered stories and the occasional tune or manufacturing idea.

And, of course, the ponies speak in english, which means their civilization stems from one of the english speaking civilizations from earth.

But I have one absurd and farfetched theory. Bear with it's abominable absurdity, please...
What if... what if a race of sentient beings created a fictional land inhabited by a fictional race, and it's fictional characters, having the purpose of entertaining a part of the masses, as well as making profit from sales of relevant (or not so much) toys and acessories.
It could happen that, for easier acceptance by said masses, the fictional characters, altough removed from the real world, had to use the same language and many aspects of the usual culture of it's creators, instead of having it's own alien language and culture...

4. Similar to 2, but only Pinkie Pie and the alicorns can break the fourth wall enough to make a jump across dimensions. The alicorns don't do it much, mostly because there's too much work for them to do in Equestria.
Spike can sort of poke the fourth wall successfully.
