she's recruiting earth ponies
the wings are magic |
| FeralSocks018 #879370 6 months ago |
I think they're a different kind of pony all together. Look at the eyes. Combine that with the wings, ears, and tail, and these guys are radically different from normal Pegasi. |

with luna around, those who prefer the dark are restablishing the balance to rejoin thier chosen princess
that's my guess |
| CogWeaver #879383 6 months ago |
How about this:
Luna can shape-shift into looking like Nightmare Moon at will. What can we deduct from this? IT'S MAGIC seriously, it's just a shape-shifting spell that only affects their wings. |
| CogWeaver #879394 6 months ago |
Correction: Only affects their wings, tails and eyes.
Their ears could just be fuzzier than usual, who knows? |
| Psychopomf #879395 6 months ago |
My personal insane fan theory is night magics affecting nocturnal ponies |
| PVRyohei #879396 6 months ago |
I once saw in a comic that they're pony/dragon hybrids. |
| Atiarotias #879400 6 months ago |
and we only saw them in Nightmare Night |

I'm pretty sure Luna was just doing an illusion spell.
That or she has some really great make-up artists. In fact, it it wouldn't surprise me if Luna spent all day before her grand entrance doing her royal guard's costumes. |
| Anonymous #879448 6 months ago |
Considering Luna was using magic all damn night, it stands to reason she applied an illusion spell to her guards. |
| Fridge_Logic #879454 6 months ago |
I like to think of them as this universe's equivalent of the Thestral, despite the fact that they aren't as skeletal as depicted in other works. |

My fanon is that to become a Night Guard you have to undergo a mystical magical ceremony that transforms them. |
| Anonymous #879530 6 months ago |
There is a whole land of batwing ponies we haven't seen. Yet. |
| Anonymous #879532 6 months ago |
Guys, they're thestrals. Unique type of creature. They're beings of the night, so Luna's guards likely either start out as such or undergo a permanent transformation in order to better serve her. Loyal indeed. |
| ILSS #879549 6 months ago |
I've always figured that transformations were Luna's specialty.
As Nightmare Moon she transformed into a magical mist, and took on a more physical shape to tempt Dash as the Shadowbolts. Her cloak turns into a cloud of bats, so she apparently isn't limited to just changing her own form. It doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to think she can magically alter her guards. |
| Anonymous #879572 6 months ago |
"All I will ask of you, my ponies, is that you serve as those Night Guards served. You will sleep while others play. You will watch while others sleep. You will serve in darkness, and be sent to dark places. Do your job well, and no pony will know of the sacrifices you make so that others may doze on a hill or nap in a tree ... I have explained what I expect from you. Any who wish to leave may do so. All those that remain... pegasus, unicorn, Earth pony. Say your vows. Say them, and I shall dye you in my colors and bind you to me." |
| Anonymous #879579 6 months ago |
Or it's possible there are more types of ponies then we are aware, not just the three founding tribes. |
| Psychopomf #879593 6 months ago |
@572
I'm okay with this. As it meshes with my headcanon that most males in Equestria are in the guard to protect normal townsfolk from threats coming from the Everfree forest. |
| Anonymouz #880161 6 months ago |
They're the species of Draconequus without being under the effect of the Elements of Disharmony.
Dragon/Pony hybrids. Bodies of ponies with the eyes and wings of dragons. Yes, I am not being serious. |
| Anonymous #880785 6 months ago |
how about the bats-turned-pony like the mice from gala ep.? |
| Erroneous #880947 6 months ago |
They're proof that Spike has a chance with Rarity. |
| Anonymous #881145 6 months ago |
@161 Is not entirely unbased in myth, either. The long-ma, or dragon horse, is a creature of Chinese myth that inhabits (and can walk on, or in) rivers. They have scales and dragon tails -- not wings, I don't think, but Equestria could adjust that.
However, my guess -- since we never saw them again -- is that she just magicked up a propulsion system for her chariot. Option 3: Illusion spell, for Nightmare Night. |
| Anonymous #881355 6 months ago |
They were a Nightmare Night costume. |
| Questionable_Object #968449 5 months ago |
Illusions cause Luna thinks gothic stuff is cute...
And frankly I do too. |
| Anonymous #1034791 4 months ago |
Anybody consider that its part of the armor? After all, Pegasus wings have the same color as their hides... |
| Anonymous #1417673 1 month ago |
Bold text does not make what you say correct.
Costumes? I guess Luna's magic is just illusions? And the whole night/bat theme was just for show, and her room is all pink with hearts and flowers and rainbows? Nah. She magically altered her guards. There ya go. Simple explanation. |
| Anonymous #1436554 1 month ago |
Considering that Luna wasn't even celebrating Nightmare Night or even trying to look scary until the end of the episode, the theory that the guards were dressed up for Nightmare Night doesn't work.
My personal theory: they were recruited from Prancylvania. |
