They don't seem to come from regular ponies, I don't think it's a genetics issue. Maybe similar ancestors, but we don't even know where the ponies themselves come from. |

They don't. As Goddesses, Luna and Celestia need to assume mortal-esque forms in order to walk among their mortal subjects. The "Alicorn" is a mix of all three pony races, and therefore symbolic of the two sisters' power over Equestria. Alicorns don't actually exist, that is simply the ideal form for them to take. |

874976 - I don't think they're descended goddesses, nor are they called alicorns (they're called unicorns in the show, so winged unicorns is a more specific term for them). Luna in particular doesn't behave like one with deity-like knowledge, and we know from Hearth's Warming Eve that regular unicorns can combine their power to raise and lower the sun. |

Hmm.... Well then, that actually makes their origins even MORE enigmatic. It's so much easier to think of them as deities, but if they ascended to power rather than descended to the mortal realm, that begs the question: Who were they before rising to power, and where did they come from? |
