Can't we just agree that pony genetics are almost completely random and that while the parent's pony type plays a role that the baby pony could come out as any type

All that explanation, and the author forgot that two species can't have fertile offsprings.
So, there aren't three pony *species*. They're at most subspecies.

^A common misconception. Actually hybridization is quite common within the same genus (such as horse, donkey and zebra in the Equus genus), and these hybrids aren't neccessarily infertile (another popular misconception), though it is true that fertility drops dramatically in a hybrid species. Though of course, "species" is an artificial term, and pony interbreeding may have any degree of difficulty depending on how different they are genetically (based on the fact that there are still three distinct types of ponies today, either there is a cultural taboo keeping them separate, or horns, wings and general Earth pony traits are genetically very dominant traits).

You are, of course, right that they are probably subspecies.

That's a pretty good model. I was wondering about ratios, and this makes sense. Unicorns pretty rare, earth ponies most common seems best. Well done.
