My theory is that because they didn't really put any characterization into the former, the latter ponies were much cuter because they actually had personalities (poninalities?). Also the color scheme looks better to me on Pumpkin and Pound Cake. |

The facial features are so stoic and oddly placed.

I didn't mind the first little guy either.
I think it's mostly just the sarcastic funny-posts than anything serious. Then again, the horror segment in the recent episode kind of makes them look scary at times.. |

I didn't find them all that cute, to tell you the truth. And some of their actions seemed oddly out of place for their age, like empathising with Pinkie and then providing their own pratfall to appease her. And the final part, where they finally fell asleep and said her name, that was something that felt unnecessarily forced.
I mean, the designs are cuter than the MMDW one, but not downright Egophilliac adorable. |

The eyes on the first baby are too far apart, its forehead is huge, and the eyebrows don't help. The head is overall too WIDE on the first one. Apparently this was recognized and fixed for the later baby ponies. |

^^That's fair enough. I'm only really saying what I thought of them. The writers and animators definitely made it clear what they were aiming for, so while it missed the mark for me, they struck a chord with you (and quite a few other people, it seems).
I do agree with you that they put Pinkie Pie through a huge amount of torment though. XD |

Its all proportions. Splashy's head is a LOT bigger than his body. Plus he didn't move a lot so it was a bit strange. Pound and Pumpkin had a lot of movement, which was especially cute. Also they seem to be drawn in Smartie Belle style. |

I think it's because Splashy had black eyes, while Pound and Pumpkin had brown and blue eyes respectively. |
