I have a theory about Pumpkin Cake's magic, and it goes like this:
Baby unicorn magic is completely instinctive, so they don't really think about how they're doing it, they just do it. So when Pumpkin wanted to get the dolls, her magic simply moved them over without he needing to think about the mechanics of levitation. Same with the self-levitation and the phasing. She wanted to join her brother, so the magic did it in the most direct way possible by levitating her. She wanted out of the cage, so her magic allowed her to simply walk out. As for why a baby was able to do that while we haven't seen an adult unicorn do it (for the phasing, at least), it probably has to do with the fact that baby magic is purely instinctive, but as they grow older and become more rational ponies, they lose a lot of the instincts they had as a foal. Similar things happen with humans, too: as we grow up and develop rational thinking, we become more constrained by what our mind tells us is and isn't possible. |

I had that thought, too. Rarity did note that unicorn foals use funky magic in spurts, so that could simply have been one of Pumpkin's instinctive magic episodes. She's so young that she won't remember any of it later and will have to relearn it, if she manages at all. Now, as for Pound's insanely early flying ability and freakish wing strength... I got nothin' for that one. Once a human baby learns to walk, he never forgets. I would think the same thing applies to flying. That means that Pound is destined to be a freakin' superhero or something, like the flying equivalent of the Incredible Hulk. POUND SMASH!!! XD |
