^Really? I felt it was a bit daft an horribly lacking in dialogue. Not to mention full of really, really idiotic moves on his part. Some of the shooting was nice though. I wasn't too keen on the soundtrack though. |

^ The dialogue lacking was refreshing, rarely does a movie do that. And he did those "idiotic moves", because he was madly in love with that woman and he was already a psycho... |

^That romance seemed to come out of nowhere for me, not to mention that it was one sided, which became more apparent as their relationship ended. All of his dualogues between him and her (and some of the other cast members) came across as if they'd chosen the most inappropiate non-sequiturs from an already written script. Even the way her husband reacts to his presence in their household after his release from prison didn't seem natural and his role, which started quite late into the film, was just a meandering mess of confusion because of his necessity to the plot. He was only there so that he could killed in the story, so any character development, which ended up being solely for him anyway, was made immediately redundant. He didn't even need to be in the story, as the two mobsters were out for him and Bryan Cranston's character anyway.
I had no feeling for the protagonist. His mute ways and incomprehensible actions left me feeling testy. His fortune made him unlikeably arrogant and his unsociable nature made all of his interactions unbelievable. I didn't hate the film; Ron Perlman and Albert Brooks had some nice exchanges (one of the better ones being the first half of the café scene) and as I said, some of the shots were very nicely composed. But it struck me so hard as a film trying to be as damnably cool as it could, the scorpion jacket being the best example, and ending up being a sodding great mess. |
