It's the same reason Derpy is associated with muffins- it's the only line she ever got, so that's what the fandom sticks with.
It's like how we see your sick ass in a diaper and (correctly) assume that's what defines you. |

I imagine Pipsqueak as someone who enjoyed pirates as a kid, and then went and made that dream true. I think there is a sense of curiosity and exploration and pushing to "where no pony has ever gone before" in imagining him a sailor. I actually imagine young teen Pipsqueak as a bit awkward, as it is often with people who have decided to achieve something that most people treat as a phase or a daydream. And when I imagine him as an adult, I imagine him with a sort of childlish passion of someone who really did prove his dream to be possible and has earned others' grudging admiration by becoming really good at something unusual.
That's just fanon, but like BonBon and Lyra, I think it makes the character interesting. |

Fanon Pipsqueak makes me like him a lot more than I originally did when he debuted in Luna Eclipsed. He was cute and looked interesting enough in that episode, I liked him, but that was it. Now, thanks to all the fanart, the story "Pirates for a Day", and the Ask Captain Pipsqueak tumblr, I now find him to be really cool.
I also love how his patches make him look kinda funny (but no less cute) as a colt, but as an adult it makes him look badass. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to make this my wallpaper |
