I self-identify as a homophobe but it's not about sexual orientation neither I am oppossed to gay-marriage and equal rights for homosexual relationships. I also have no problem with bisexuals (that are often victims of homosexuals' labeling and bigotry), it's mostly that the gay community (or at least the most vocal part) is largely obnoxious in a similar way feminazis are and are often very bitter and antagonistic towards other sexual orientations/genders, ee pejoratives like: breeders and closetcases (sometimes for the entire bisexual "community" for example). |

One might as well ask, "Why are there 'X' or 'Y' people in this fandom?" You'll have many different types of people from all walks of life in any given fandom.
Some people are raised with very different norms from one another. While I myself don't mind what orientation, color, race, religion, what-have-you a person is, I imagine it's a different story for those raised to believe a given orientation is "wrong". (Or those who have had negative personal experiences.) Social norms are not something one can change overnight--not without very good reasons, anyway. People won't change unless they themselves want to change. Then there is the case of trolls. They may not actually believe what they're posting, but do it just to stir up others. The answer to both is really not take any of this too seriously. If you're getting upset, maybe it's time to walk away for a little bit. If you know what triggers you, then get a username and filter out content you don't like. Starting a conversation is alright, too, provided you have a goal in mind and are willing to stick to that goal. |

As a sexual health educator and psychologist, I can say that homophobia comes from two primary sources. First, misinformation, which can either be taught by those who were already ignorant to the facts about homosexuality (i.e.: traditionalist parents, republicans, church members, etc.) or found through bad sources (INTERNET), is a powerful motivator for hate, because it leads people to think that the hate is justified, or that they are doing some poor gay person a service by making them want to be straight *(I have actually heard that one in person). Second, the fear of being labeled as a homosexual will drive other towards intolerance. Whether this is because they are "in the closet" and don't want somebody finding out their secret, or because they see the horrible prejudices that the LGBT community has to face due to people from the first category (traditionalist parents, republicans, church members, etc.) and are willing to do anything to avoid those consequences, even subjugate innocent people to punishments because they are different, something that many people wouldn't even dream of in issues of race or sex (whether you are male or female) anymore.
As you may be able to see, it's a bit of a vicious cycle. The more people who are misinformed, the more people will fear homosexuality, and the more people fear homosexuality, the more people buy into the people who are feeding them lies about homosexuality. And then they will turn around and teach others, making an even larger impact. Frankly, the LGBT community has to fight for their rights the same way that African Americans did and Women did, or they will never be respected and accepted. Many of them know this, and so they become "militant" towards others whenever the subject comes up. It's a natural response, and people single them out for it. However, there are some people who push it too far, such as borderline exposure and public indecency, and those individuals ARE wrong, as they are breaking the law. With regards to this fandom, I agree with the major point made by Arrkhal above that the majority of the people in this fandom are feeling as though their respective masculinities are being challenged by the show, seeing as how it is primarily made for young girls ages 3 to 7. There is a major flaw in this thinking, though. Gender is not binary. Something does not necessarily have to be either feminine or masculine in the same way that people can be androgynous. The show also is not as juvenile as it was in season one, as the creators and animators of the show have recognized the surprise demographic and have proceeded to pander to us. (No complaints there. :p) So since the show, which was based on the ideals of a woman who wanted to challenge the traditional ideas of what is "girly" and what isn't, is not actually male or female (it is an object with no reproductive organs, so it cannot be scientifically classified as one gender or sex or the other), there is no way it can threaten somebody's gender identity or sexuality unless they themselves decide to consider a change in their lifestyle based on something that they saw in the show and took WAY too seriously. It is a TV show, people, and none of us have any reason to be afraid of it or anything that comes from it. This includes even the most f*cked up stuff that comes from this fandom. And if you find something that bothers you, stop looking at it. There is no need to even comment on something that you don't like, and if everybody hates it and refuses to comment or fave it, then it will get ignored and the person who decided to try and make it will eventually get discouraged and stop. Remember, trolls troll for the reaction that they get from people, so if you don't react, eventually, they will stop. There will be no motivation to continue. How this applies to the people in the fandom that don't like gay fanart or fics: If the pic is tagged "gay" or the fic is tagged "male/male shipping" and that isn't your thing, DON'T LOOK AT IT.
