@Fuzzy: No matter where you are on the internet, most anons are pitiful and pathetic creatures. They are well aware of this fact, hence the reason why they post as anons, too ashamed of themselves to admit an identity to their feeble ignorant ways of thinking. It's simply a way for them to spout their nonsense and feel like they can get away with it because deep down they know the vast majority look down on them.

@Adam: You may want to buy a dictionary (or just google it, really) and look up the word "racist". You'll find that it doesn't encompass religions of any kind.

As for the sexism, read the Koran or take a look at any muslim nation. The latter will tell you more about Islam's stance on women than I could in a five-minute rant.

Suffice to say beating your wife if she's disobedient is the god-given right of any muslim male.

@Saufsoldat;

My problem isn't that you're objecting to the poor treatment of women in numerous Muslim countries. My problem is you're characterizing this as the only way women are treated throughout the entirety of the religion and ergo a woman Muslim must be stereotyped as "self-hating" or "misogynist". The status of women in Muslim majority nations like Uzbekistan, Indonesia, and Turkey is a lot higher than say...Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan. (Which is at least part of the reason why people say "racist" when they run into such comments, since Islamophobia often appears to carry an unspoken assumption that all Muslims are Arabs given how the religion is characterized by notorious examples from the Middle East.)

Plus there are practicing Muslim women like writer Asra Q. Nomani who grew up with a form if Islam that didn't contain such misogyny, or Iranian women's rights activist Shirin Ebadi who fights for reform of her religion.

Also, while I agree 4:34 is problematic, other verses in the Q'uran paint a different picture. 4:24
requires that both spouses to reach mutual agreements in marriage. 4:128[/urk] provides that there is no stigma in a wife seeking divorce should a husband fail to live up to his obligations. Saying that religion doesn't accord women any rights or says nothing about them is patently ridiculous, even in the face of widespread problems with domestic violence against women in a large number of Muslim majority nations.
Saufsoldat
#847916

@10milesover: I also come here for the rainbows and sprinkles, which is why I don't like religion getting mixed into a clearly irreligious TV show.

@Adam: Look, it's in the damn Koran. Some verses allowing for limited women's rights does not make 4:34 any better. Not forcing women into marriage should be a given for any 20th century society, pointing it out like it's some great achievement for muslims is really just sad.

I know that some muslims are trying to reform Islam and I commend them for their efforts. But a reformed religion doesn't change the fundamentals of the religion. The Koran will still allow for wife-beating and murder of apostates, no matter how much you reform Islam. Just like the bible still glorifies genocide, no matter how modern christianity has become.

Islamophobia is as much of a real word as fascistophobia.

"The Koran will still allow for wife-beating and murder of apostates, no matter how much you reform Islam. Just like the bible still glorifies genocide, no matter how modern christianity has become. "

So your problem is that there will still be passages in the Koran allowing for wife beating or murdering of apostates, even though you seem to admit that the actual practice of Islam can be reformed as has been the case with Christianity?

What exactly is the problem here then with an artist depicting Fluttershy with a hajib?

"...pointing it out like it's some great achievement for muslims is really just sad."

And where did I present it as some huge achievement? I simply provided it as a counter-example to your simplistic characterization of Islam as having "nothing good to say" about women.

Gosh, I love procrastinating - might as well do so by engaging in some friendly commenting. Well...friendlier than the comments thus-far, in any case.

< opinion >

I’m assuming that a humanized pony exists in an alternate Equestria populated by humans. For the sake of differentiating between Equestria and the human Equestria, I’ll refer to human Equestria as Humestria. (I’m so creative.)

Humestria would share Equestria’s geography and culture, naturally – so there are several aspects of the real world that still wouldn’t be present. One of these aspects would be religion. In Humestria, the existence of Celestia – a physical goddess – would make every religious belief unnecessary. This seems true of Equestria, too – as I have yet to see any religious content within the show. You could argue that a religion could come from a society outside of Equestria – but I’m not inclined to believe something like that would be true. If any other society did exist, the general public of Equestria (and Humestria, by proxy) doesn’t seem to posses the technology nor desire to visit them.

< /opinion >

Now that I’ve given my two cents, I should point out that everything in my argument above is rendered useless by one little fact:

My Little Pony is a cartoon. A cartoon intended for children.

Thankfully, said children are blissfully unaware of the problems that come with the world’s myriad cultural differences. We adults (or young adults, as the case may be) are not so lucky. I know I can’t prevent these arguments from breaking out - but it’d be a crying shame to not at least try. Within a fandom, people see fit to create their own stories and ideas – which is cool. What’s even cooler is that we’re all free to make decisions about what we do and do not like. I suggest we all do so with grace and respect. Hugs.

tl;dr – MLP is a simple show that is simply grand. Everypony likes to express their love for the show in their own way – so feel free to engage in the fandom. But please try to be friendly about it.

After all – Friendship is Magic.

@Adam: Hold your horses now. Just because I said Islam could be reformed, doesn't mean that it's suddenly on the same level as western christianity, because it really isn't. The fact of the matter is that honor killings, anti-semitism, misogyny and homophobia are still rampant throughout the muslim world.

The hijab is a representation of Islam's sexism. There is no rational reason for why a woman should have to cover her hair or parts of her face, yet countless women in the world have no choice in the matter at all.

And again: Just because something gives women certain rights does not make it any less sexist. That's like saying "well you can beat blacks to the back of the bus, but since they have rights like not being forced into marriage, so it's not really racism".

For a fandom that contains so much homosexual shipping, ponibooru certainly is accepting of deeply homophobic ideologies. Why does wesdaaman get so much hate again?

it is a difficult matter to untangle cultural expectations with religious expectations, and both of those with systems of injustice and oppression that existed in their foundations.

this issue of whether a hijab is still a symbol of misogyny... people are debating that in the real world. in legislatures. france banned them on government property - it was literally a federal issue. and people were talking about it, about what it meant when a woman under no particular coercion from other human beings in her society, still wore this thing.

so this is a hard discussion to have. and I feel like, in this venue, in this context, it's one we're unlikely to unravel in a satisfactory way. especially if, as demographics suggest, none of the people ITT are actually muslims or women (leaving us to speak from hearsay and theory rather than actual experiential knowledge of the engines of oppression in play).

I mean, are there? are we all just talking out of our asses here?

I grew up in a muslim country, (learned both Islam and Christianity from parents)

The country is pretty slack when it comes to hijabs compare to arab countries. They can walk around by themselves no one cares, unlike Suidie arabia which is pretty strict about that. (well rich areas, its pretty slack much like a head scarf, like that pic of audrey hepburn with a scarf, google image audery hepburn scarf) Males need to wear long sleeve shirts. Young ones do complain since its so really hot and it is the law,

Chadors are usually poor people, really old ladies or arabs. Most want to wear instead of a hijab they go full on cover.

Reason why is, woman are beautiful and need to cover their buety to prevent certain things. (however today it may taken too the extreme, i agree on that,) Another "reason" one is suppose to be unbiased, for example a teacher with 2 students, a geek and a cheerleader, he has to choose one to do whatever. They tend to be biased when it comes to stuff like that

It just a sense of conservatism, much like a "sunday dress" or things in that nature. in an extreme comparison its like a woman to wear a less revealing shirt in so-cal,

Islam does not honor killings, The famous quote "Slay all that opresses, but do not being a opressor. that is not God's way" To the uneducated it says "kill is okay" but really its saying if you kill you are an oppressor, which in turn is wrong.

Much like " You can have one or to or three wives, but treat them equally, if you can not marry one"
Again to uneducated it says " its okay to marry more than one wife" however it says "treat them equally" which is practically impossible.

Their are a vast uneducated who do skew Islam, ones in power stay in power and do mess it up and imprint their "way". It is messed up, and it is a shame, Same goes with any religion really.

For islam, terrorist and title given officials are to blame to fill their agenda or to have an "better" life for themselves.

Hmm, my first post here.

I am a moslem and I hail from a predominantly moslem country. Mine is not one of those arabic countries however, so I couldnt speak for them. Moreover, we are a secular country, our law is not Islamic/Sharia law, so yeah.

Let see. In my country, the dress code is pretty laid back. If you wanted to wear hijab, more power to you. If not, then that is okay too. It is a matter of choice, I suppose. And in fact, the younger generation prefers not to wear hijab.

I wouldnt lie, there are people who strive to turn this country into an Islamic one, adopt Sharia law, and all that. But the majority of moslem, who have better things to do than minding religions, just say, "Nah, we like this secular republic more."

Discrimination against women is not unheard of. But for better or worse, one of our former presidents is a woman. And no, she never wears hijab.

tl;dr.

Hijab Fluttershy is ... nice

What? This is only the third or fourth pic of her dressed in a hijab that I'm aware of.

I take back my earlier comment about the number of artists who have drawn human Fluttershy like this. But Rarity? Eh, she's okay in this pic. It's not bad, but it's not paritcularly eye catching from what I've seen done with human versions of her. Unusual dress aside, Fluttershy mostly catches my eye because of her smile and the way the artist makes her eyes glisten.

^ I know more about Islam than most of the morons white-knighting in its favor. I know for example that the Quran allows men to beat their wives. Name a single western country in which a husband is allowed to beat his wife.

There's a world of difference between a muslim country and a country that happens to be predominantly muslim. Women are mistreated in muslim countries and that's a fact. Pointing to female politicians is pathetic and completely misses the point.

By all means, keep defending a religion that says the artist who drew this picture will go to hell.
