A million apologies for this, by the way. The DB server downtime wasn't my fault, but the nap I took right before support got back to me was.

Time to start looking at setting up a failover server, I think.

I think you underestimate just how complex PostgreSQL clustering is, not to mention how complex it is to pull off effectively in a way that your application can tolerate.
