Actually, I remember at least one fic where she was named Annie Smith, and I totally accepted it then too. Annie Smith is best name for Granny Smith.

I'm with NIghtJack on this one. A Granny Smith is a type of apple, so there's nothing unusual about giving a young filly that name. She just happened to become a grandmother later.
