^ Wait, what? Ponibooru.org is the same site with a different suffix?
I don't understand. How does that work? .org.is faster?

Ponibooru is God Tier when it comes to shit posting. So much wasted bandwidth on pictures of potatos and gyro bowls.

Well you know ...

Yeah ponibooru.org is faster then 413chan.

Am not sure but 413chan also share other sites with is slower.
Org is standing on its own.

But again not sure.

Actually, the poor performance we've been seeing has almost nothing to do with image size, unless your own connection is unusually slow.

The long pole is the backend - the webserver and SQL server, which are always running out of memory and CPU bandwidth, respectively.

I'm looking into solutions to this that won't break the bank.

(The difference in performance between the 413chan.net address and the .org address is a mystery to me, actually; the two domains are hosted from the same webserver. I suspect there's some kind of load-balancing logic in Apache that makes sure all the domains on the server have an "equal share" of the server resources, but that's speculation, not fact.)

Hey look, it's suggestion time!
Make the Question marks near tags work. Now they do mostly nothing.

Shit! "Break the bank" made me realize I've been running AdBlock all this time. Whitelisted it now.

Can you ever forgive me?

I have adblock disabled on ponibooru because the ads are occasionally hilarious and don't cause any harm otherwise. I save adblock for the sites with the ads that jump out and follow you around the screen until you click on them.

@txgb324: Don't worry about it. Poor performance actually hurts site revenue a lot more than individual users with AdBlock (since people end up viewing fewer pages, and thus, fewer ads). ;)

Anyway, I've put in a request to my webhost for a beefier server. Site might be going down some time late tonight to do the migration; I'll put up a blotter notice when I know the details.

@Eco:
Could you post that message on Twitter as well please? I know it doesn't take forever to migrate, but I wouldn't mind a heads up, if that's okay. It'll help when I try to compensate for the time zone difference. :)

IMAGE SIZE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW SLOW THE SITE IS!

Images are stored on img.ponibooru.org: 69.163.253.218
Ponibooru main server is www.ponibooru.org: 64.90.57.145

Ponibooru's image server is actually way more responsive than the main server. Ponibooru is slow because of shitty database design. Consider this error message I got:

Syntax error: 7 ERROR: syntax error at or near ")"
LINE 1: SELECT images.* FROM images WHERE (rating IN ()) AND (imag...
^<p>Error: SELECT images.* FROM images WHERE (rating IN ()) AND (images.id not in ( SELECT distinct image_id from image_tags where tag_id in (6524) ))ORDER BY images.id DESC LIMIT :limit OFFSET :offset

Assuming that a "normal" query is identical except for the ratings list not being empty, every query involves building a temporary list of all image IDs with tag 6524 and checking every image returned against this list.

If you want to try out the new server before the "official" migration, you can find it at whitetail.ponibooru.org.

jspenguin: for what it's worth, we're running Postgres, which isn't quite as dumb about subqueries as MySQL is. Theoretically it should be rewriting that query into a join.

h'bout this

if(picture:IsShit())then
. picture:DontUpload()
end
Eco

That would require it to be possible to objectively identify an image as "shit". I don't want to get into that business; I don't want my opinions to dictate the form of the site.

Would it help if I added a "minimum score" to the filter page?

Also if you're going to run ads I would totally run with Project Wonderful over Adsense; PW's way friendlier and with the amount of traffic you must get you should probably get some pretty high bids for ad spaces.

Eco: picture shitness determination is client-side code, not server-side. Don't worry yourself about that!

I considered Project Wonderful! But unfortunately:
Publisher Standards said:
1. Adult content
Sites with adult content are not allowed on Project Wonderful.

Whereas as far as I can tell AdSense's rules only limit what exists on a particular page and the things to which it links.

Don't worry about the adult content thing. That rule only exists to prevent pornography sites publishing on PW. If oglaf.com and 1d4chan.org can run PW ads, so can ponibooru; they really will not be bothered. Even if they do take offence (and I find it very hard to imagine they would) and deny you, there's absolutely no harm in submitting to PW to be a publisher and finding out whether or not it would be possible. Doesn't cost you anything. So do it right now.

I mean, Oglaf takes the precautionary measure of not including PW ads on the pages that are explicitly NSFW, but 1d4chan has some articles that are pretty much just porn galleries and still loads the ads on those, so I strongly doubt they'll be fussed about it (especially since the default user's view of the site hides explicit and spoilers questionable images anyway).
